GOP leaders seek to fend off Trump endorsement as far-right Republican eyes Illinois primary bid

Donald Trump's closest Hill allies are privately lobbying the former President to get involved in a Republican-on-Republican matchup in Illinois, a potentially messy scenario that has sparked internal strife in the party and prompted GOP leaders to launch a counter-campaign aimed at keeping Trump on the sidelines.

At the center of it all is freshman Rep. Mary Miller, a member of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus who has been left without a seat after redistricting. Now she's deciding whether to challenge fellow Illinois Republican Reps. Rodney Davis or Mike Bost. Hoping to boost Miller's political prospects, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia — another controversial firebrand who is close with Miller — has been talking her up to Trump and encouraging him to throw his weight behind Miller, according to multiple GOP sources.

A Trump endorsement would turbocharge the intraparty battle and potentially make things even stickier, something GOP leaders are eager to avoid. So House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has worked behind-the-scenes to head it off: he has urged Trump to stay out of the primary race, telling the former President that Bost and Davis -- who are poised to become committee chairmen if Republicans reclaim the House after next year's midterms -- are both good members, sources said.

Oh, well if they're good members and are poised to become committee chairmen then...

You can see where the priorities are.

FYI, the Speaker can appoint committee chairmen as he or she chooses.

There’ll be no going back for the GOP, Kev. Either get with the program or step aside.

If McCarthy is for something, then my first working assumption is that he’s not just wrong, he’s up to no good.

We need more MTG’s and Lauren Boeberts in the caucus, not fewer.

Term limits. Term limits. Term limits. Term limits.

No career politicians.

What does it mean to be a ‘good’ member? Voting as the leadership says you should? Kicking back campaign dollars to the leadership?

Somehow being a ‘good member’ makes me think of the corrupt cops in Serpico.

Where was McCarthy when Kinzinger went against good conservative incumbent Don Manzullo in the 16th when Illinois redistricted Kinzinger out of the 13th in 2012?

Sorry, but Mary Miller has as much right to her seat as the others, and Freedom Caucus should be first among equals for Trump supporters.

Yep, that's part of it.

McCarthy is against her. I cannot imagine a more ringing endorsement. Trump should back her immediately.

If there ever existed more compelling evidence that one of the things that Trump did of great importance was lowering the level of the swamp enough that it exposed what the GOP actually is, then I have never seen it.

Trump may not have drained the swamp or even greatly diminished it, but he lowered it enough that exposed backstabbers on our side who do us harm as a nation.

Exactly that. It’s all about the $$$$$ in the swamp. And looking cool to twenty something Hill interns/staffers that members want a little noon time side action with.

Trump endorsements win 137-3, ‘few parallels’ in history

For anyone questioning former President Donald Trump’s lock on the Republican Party after his 2020 loss, look no further than the impact his endorsement packs.

In new polling of several House Republican primary races, a Trump endorsement pushes 2022 candidates past 50%, even against long-established incumbents such as Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney.

“The Trump endorsement is a true dagger,” said Zachary Moyle of SoCo Strategies. “Trump is the king of kingmakers.”

In last month’s elections, for example, Trump-endorsed candidates went four for four.

And according to Brian Jack, the former White House political director, Trump’s 2020 record was 120-2, and this year, it is 17-1.

“Results don’t lie,” he said. “The power of President Trump’s endorsement is undeniable.”

GOP leaders to launch a counter-campaign aimed at keeping Trump on the sidelines.

Ha! I just saw another thread that says Trump-endorsed candidates have a record of 137-3 against those who oppose him.

The GOP always excels at figuring out how to keep the left in power. We need a new party.

So the squishy Republican establishment is happily conceding the hyper-partisan Democrat gerrymander of Illinois because it helps them get rid of one of their inconvenient (read: “conservative”) members?

No judge has ever overturned a Democrat gerrymander (in contrast to numerous Republican maps which have been overruled in recent years for flimsy reasons or no reason at all) but does it hurt so much to even try, that they’d rather not bother?
