As a moderate, U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski sometimes votes with the Republican fold, sometimes against. And sometimes she does both on the same issue, as she did this month on raising the debt limit.
Last week, Murkowski broke with most of her party when she voted to make it easier for the Senate to pass an increase in the national debt limit.
“Because it was the right thing to do,” Murkowski told reporters.
Without an increase, the government would run out of money to pay military and civilian salaries, debt payments and other spending Congress has already agreed to.
Murkowski said a credit default would send a bad signal to America’s adversaries. The measure she helped pass last week lowered the voting threshold to a simple majority, eliminating the chance of a filibuster on a debt limit bill.
But this week, Murkowski stuck with her party as she voted no on the debt increase.
Murkowski said she agreed with something Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said a few months ago: if Democrats were going to push ahead with their spending plans, they’d have to pass the debt hike on their own.
“What I was willing to do was to ensure that there was a process to go forward to allow them to do just that,” she said.

Jerk the Murk!!!!!!!
Don’t kid yourself. If the Senate needed 100 votes to raise the debt ceiling, there would have been 100 U.S. Senators falling all over themselves to pass it.
Her 2nd vote was MEANINGLESS and we ALL should know that and act accordingly.
And the phoniness continues.
SPIT!
She will step up to the plate to vote for BBB when the bill comes to the floor for a vote! Don’t ever underestimate the stupid backstabbing RINOS to throw a lifeline to the sinking Boat of the drowning ratsThere are already rumors swirling around that she will vote yes. I hate this POS! What’s wrong with y’all Alaskans wake up!
I wish they did need 100%. The power that would give Rand...
Well, it's surprising that this is even getting noticed in this instance because the GOP has been doing stuff like this since the Bushes took over the party.
Ditch tends to spread the pain around so no one of “his” large string of Senators has to take all the arrows.
The only reason she can be labelled a “moderate” is because the left has moved so far left.
20yrs ago, or even 10, she would have been labelled “radical” or extreme.
There has been such a radical shift left that conservatives are now considered “extremists”
It is not conservatives who have shifted…
The whole thing is just BS. Congress hasn’t passed a budget since 2008, or near enough. They call them “spending packages” now. Or “stimulus” or “continuing resolution” yadda yadda.
Then they have this cute little arrangement where later, they claim they have to raise the debt ceiling because, well gosh, it’s money they’ve already stolen. Er, “spent on infrastructure” I mean.
You get the idea. It’s some kind of self-licking ice cream cone they got going out there in Washington city.
“Congress hasn’t passed a budget since 2008”
Is a budget a plan, as opposed to an accounting of money already taken in and spent?
What would have happened if the debt ceiling wasn’t raised?
She lost her 2010 primary v. Joe Miller.
She then campaigned as a write-in candidate. A judge determined that any spelling of her name was close enough.
Alaska has been a semi-corrupt GOP state for a long time.
It’s an old trick by politicians on both sides.
See, you’re already playing their game!
The question is, “what happens if they don’t borrow so much money and then waste it on stupid schitt, and send you the bill”?
“See, you’re already playing their game!”
Your answer seems to be that if the debt ceiling is not raised they just borrow more money. That doesn’t make sense because the debt ceiling is a limit to borrowing.
Here’s your chance to explain how, the debt ceiling can be pierced by ... will, you tell us.
I can explain it to you, but I can’t make you understand it. Sorry.
“I can explain it to you, but I can’t make you understand it.”
Your explanation would just be an opinion that we’ve heard before.
