WASHINGTON (AP) — As strained U.S. hospitals brace for a new surge of COVID-19 cases caused by the fast-spreading omicron variant, doctors are warning of yet another challenge: the two standard drugs they’ve used to fight infections are unlikely to work against the new strain.
For more than a year antibody drugs from Regeneron and Eli Lilly have been the go-to treatments for early COVID-19, thanks to their ability to head off severe disease and keep patients out of the hospital.
But both drugmakers recently warned that laboratory testing suggests their therapies will be much less potent against omicron, which contains dozens of mutations that make it harder for antibodies to attack the virus. And while the companies say they can quickly develop new omicron-targeting antibodies, those aren’t expected to launch for at least several months.
A third antibody from British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline appears to be the best positioned to fight omicron. But Glaxo’s drug is not widely available in the U.S., accounting for a small portion of the millions of doses purchased and distributed by the federal government. U.S. health officials are now rationing scarce drug supplies to states.
“I think there’s going to be a shortage,” said Dr. Jonathan Li, director of the Harvard/Brigham Virology Specialty Laboratory. “We’re down to one FDA-authorized monoclonal antibody” with omicron because of the reduced effectiveness of Regeneron and Lilly's drugs.
The delta variant still accounts for more than 95% of estimated U.S. cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But agency leaders say omicron is spreading faster than any past variant and will become the dominant strain nationwide within weeks.
Delivered by injection or infusion, antibodies are laboratory-made versions of human proteins that help the immune system fight off viruses and other infections.

Go see for yourself, talk to the medical tech at the front desk. If it's not packed as I say, you have nothing to worry about.

No, hospitals were not packed the first time.
Trump had mobile hospitals set up in all the major citie sandeven ordered hospital ships to be utilized at major ports. My recollection is, there weren’t 10 people treated at those things.
We also have learned from whistleblowers that many of the hospitalized people are hospitalized for testing positive, not for having severe symptoms. All of those people should have been sent home with a prescription for Ivermectin and told to only come back if their symptoms get worse.

Brilliant question. All shots should now stop, vaccine mandates listed, and vaccine passports banned.
But this was never about health. It was always about control.
Most people go to ER only because they want to get tested fast, they simply can’t understand that this overwhelms ER, they’re just selfish (I talk to these same people EVERY DAY in my work)Also ER packed with no insurance patients that use ER as PCP. Few are admitted because the medical establishment refuses to provide any early treatment. Local hospitals here don’t even bother to tell people about availability of monoclonal antibodies when they present to ER with early illness. Most hospitals are short staffed because a) they’ve lost workers to vaccine mandates -they’ll never admit that!! and b) they have also always operated low or understaffed long before Covid, intentionally to save money. I am a nurse- no amount of money in past 10+ years could get me to work in a hospital again and put my license on line the way they normally staff! It was bad enough then. Hospitals make extra money off every Covid test, every Covid admission and every Covid patient they put on a ventilator, there are monetary incentives being GIVEN and withheld to keep the this going. Ask anyone in billing. It’s all a shell game and they know which one holds the pea. There will always be hospital somewhere that is struggling and there will always be someone sick enough to be hospitalized or die, that doesn’t mean sky is falling and that every hospital is filled with Covid or that everyone is dying either.

Hospitals are short of STAFFED BEDS.
They have lost so many employees that they cannot take patients for beds/wards they cannot staff.
The Javits Center in NYC was converted to hospital space & they had very few IF ANY patients.
The MERCY Hospital chips had VERY FEW patients...despite Cuomo crying for help from Trump........
It may not matter. Omicron is showing itself to be a fast burner. It'll be here and gone before any of the big pharma companies manage to create and ship antibodies or other treatments for it.
My wife just tested positive a couple of days ago. Went back to the nursing home where she works yesterday for a follow-up test which was also positive. We stopped there on the way to a monoclonal infusion center where she got the Eli Lily infusion. We don’t know if she’s got Delta or Omicron but it doesn’t really matter. If she’s got Delta, the infusion will help. If she’s got Omicron, it’s no big deal because it’s so much milder.
I’ve also got everything here for the Zelenko/FLCCC protocols. So far, we’re taking all the vitamins and supplements and if need be, can start the IVM/Doxy. I haven’t had any symptoms yet and hers are about the same as a cold so far. Just a cough today and had a headache yesterday. She has an appetite, sense of small and taste and is eating right now.
