Hyundai Allegedly Closes Its Combustion Engine Development Center

The current crop of engines will apparently be Hyundai's final fuel burners.

The electric push is on as manufacturers race to position themselves for an EV future. Many companies have made verbal commitments to going all-electric, but Hyundai could be taking a bold step by ending the development of future internal combustion engines right now.

That's the word in a report from Business Korea. In an article that dropped just before Christmas, the report claims Hyundai Motor Group officially cut its engine development department at the company's Namyang Research Institute south of Seoul. The report also states the automaker's powertrain group was reorganized into an electrification development team, and that a battery development group....

This alleged announcement comes on the heels of the EPA announcement on Dec 20 that they will tighten fuel mileage standards for new gas-powered vehicles to 40mpg.

An emerging issue with electric cars? A $23K battery, that generates error codes as it fails, leading this individual to blow his up, rather than foot the repair bill

In the meantime, England has moved the ban date for gas-powered vehicles from 2040 to 2030, prompting some Brits to ask if they should start riding horses. But no nation has explained how they will compensate for 2x to 4x the pressure on the electric grid.

The writing is on the wall. By 2030 or so, EVs will be the standard. Legacy gas cars will still be around, but only until they run out of refueling options.

“Red Barchetta”

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I’ve got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

There will be no way to fuel gasoline cars, and the EV’s will not be good enough for anything beyond short commutes. Of course there will be Limo’s to take the VIP’s to the airport, and helicopters, to say nothing of yachts. There is just not enough ability to generate electricity to charge these vehicles, they will be sitting in garages as storage units for the power grid. It is an integral part of the power “production” grid. The power generated by solar by day, and wind will be stored for the night in the cars we drive.

I’m hoping it’ll be a free market movement to EVs. So far it seems to be.

A few years ago Mary Barra (GM CEO) was asked about the abysmal sales of EV’s. Her response was telling. She said we will give them NO CHOICE.

Besides wild eyed spittle flying at the screen, what’s your point? That market forces won’t eventually go to EVs? They’re growing rapidly every year and will replace gas cars entirely in 10 year unless something drastic changes.

I guess we'll never know.

It’s already the growth market. We’ll know when it his 25%, then 50, then 75, in 10 years.

Electric vehicles account for 2% of sales.

You’re saying they will account for 75% of sales in ten years?

Electric vehicles (EV), including battery electric and plug-in hybrids, made up 7.2% of global car sales in the first half of 2021, up from 2.6% in 2019 and 4.3% in 2020,

Yeah, I’d say it’s about right.

Oh, hybrids. I thought we were discussing electric vehicles.

Wait, don’t hybrids burn gasoline?

They’re a dying breed, pure EVs are taking over.

If you don’t see that, you’re a buggy whip salesman around 1905.

Well I can see that. Heck, they're all the way up to 2%.

I guess you use floppy discs too. The times are going with EVs, and they’ll eventually take over. Every major auto factory is shutting down ICE’s and going towards EV’s.

I’ll be sold when they finally go to swappable batteries, ala the Rhino propane tank model (with some convenient battery swapping technology, of course.)

I think the idea of discarding cars at an early age will naturally limit their popularity.
