The danger of Israel’s bird flu outbreak jumping to humans is real and “very concerning,” according to a top epidemiologist.
Prof. Amnon Lahad, chairman of Israel’s National Council for Community Health, told The Times of Israel that he is tracking the avian outbreak, which has killed thousands of wild birds.
“The widespread nature of the avian flu is very concerning, especially given that it is infecting chickens and not just wild birds. It’s made the move from wildlife to stock animals, and I’m hoping it won’t make the next step to humans,” he said Wednesday.
Most bird flu strains don’t infect humans. However, four strains have caused concern: H5N1 since 1997, H7N9 since 2013, H5N6 since 2014 and H5N8 since 2016. Lahad said that since little is known about the current infections, the possibility of a jump to humans must be taken seriously.

“They” have been predicting the Avian Flu jump for some time. I was stationed with the MFO in the Sinai in the “Security” section in 2006-2007. The CO requested weekly updates on the number of Avian Flu cases in Egypt. I never saw that request like that before and haven’t seen it since.
Makes me think someone knows something that they’re not sharing with the rest of us.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) does that. Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza is the more common culprit being spread.
I handle hundreds of migratory birds every year as part of ongoing research into bird nesting patterns and nesting success. We also handle 90-100 dead birds a year as part of a mortality census. If HPAI is a cause of observed mortalities, I would expect to see high nestling mortality. Have never seen that.
For birds, it's all about minimizing risk and potential disease spread between nests. Things like spraying hands with Isopropyl Alcohol 70% after birds or nestlings are handled is a good practice, and it reduces the chance of spreading diseases such as avian pox among nests. For West Nile Virus, when species like crows and Blue Jays are found dead and death may have been recent, gloves are used, as crows and Blue Jays are particularly vulnerable to poor WNV outcomes.
For humans, I'd be more concerned at this point about picking up a tick while in the field. Or blundering into an area that has an active Great-horned Owl nest. They are very aggressive during nesting season when owlets are present.

We have a pond in our neighborhood in a Dallas Suburb. During the last Bird Flu Scare (2006?), a local FEMA guy wanted to talk to our HOA about the potential of a bird flying in from parts unknown, landing at our pond and somebody interacting with said bird, contrtacting a avian flu and starting a pandemic in Dallas that stpreads to the world.
I raise my hand and said “wouldn’t it be more likely that someone who lives & eats with birds daily, gives it to close contact and that close contact flies into the US via DFW international airport, 7 miles away?”
“Stammer... Stammer... maybe.”
Ralph Baric is probably working on a humanized pigeon lung as we sit here, to get in on some of that sweet sweet grant/patent money.
