Ministers are keen to ease immigration restrictions in a bid to make it easier for thousands of Indian citizens to live and work in the UK as part of forthcoming trade talks.
The potential offer will be under discussion when the international trade secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, travels to Delhi this month, reports the Times. Relaxing immigration rules for Indian citizens is a key demand from Delhi.
Trevelyan is said to have the backing of the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, who is keen to curb China’s growing influence in the region. However, they are likely to meet strong resistance from the home secretary, Priti Patel, who opposes the offer.
According to the publication, visa relaxation options under consideration include a scheme similar to one agreed with Australia which would allow young Indians the right to live and work in the UK for up to three years. Another would be to cut visa fees for students and allow them to stay in Britain for a period of time after they graduate.
...On Friday Boris Johnson said he would “deliver on the promise of Brexit” and create new trade agreements.

It’s the exact opposite of what they should be doing.
“Relaxing immigration rules for Indian citizens is a key demand from Delhi.”
They best be careful what they wish for; I assumed they already had a “brain drain” (according to Indians here in the US).
I thought everybody in India moved to the DFW area based on what I’m seeing.
“My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize.” Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.)
I am actually puzzled as to why India would want to encourage brain drain from their own country.
What is in it for them to lose talented and productive citizens?
Patel clearly feels she has something to prove being anti-immigration when she is a child of immigrants herself.
Indians are already the largest non-native ethnic minority in the UK, and unlike most other ethnic minorities, tend to be conservative voters. They aren’t a threat to the social fabric of Britain like some other groups are.
The genocide accelerates
I assume the remittances from the “Indian diaspora”; Mexico is reliant on them.
What is in it for them to lose talented and productive citizens?
Indians go to the U.K. (the U.S. too) and then send money back to family still in India. Indian workers abroad pump a lot of money into the economy back in India. That's why they encourage it.
Lots of Indians in DFW, eh?
Remittances?
Regards,
Remittances are around 85 billion usd per annum for the Indian diaspora.
Also it seems fewer Indians are migrating
“They aren’t a threat to the social fabric of Britain like some other groups are.”
I agree with you. In fact they seem to integrate better as well. Plus build businesses.
I’m sure plenty no longer have to leave as the US companies move jobs there; when I reach out to financial staff who replaced American accountants they get back the next day - as they are sleeping when I send emails. Their email signatures openly list India addresses.
