In the “Harry Potter” world, Gringott’s Bank, the bank that serves wizards and where treasures are stored in a mysterious network of underground tunnels and chambers, is run by goblins, who are depicted as ill-tempered, short-statured creatures with long noses and ears with a love of gold.

It never ends with these people. Let me, just for the sake of having a little fun, take Jon Stewart Seriously. Protocols of the Elders of Zion, eh? Were the Goblins conspiring to take over the world, then? And did they even have penises, let alone circumcised ones? And since when are Jews experts in the provenance of magical objects, like these creatures were, or enjoy torturing animals before eating them? How does he know that they weren't a low-land Scots stereotype instead? Hagrid would be stereotype of a wild, earthy highlander, of course, but those lowlanders are stereotyped with an entirely different nature. Why is it that Stewart automatically thinks of Jews? Could it be that he's anti-Semitic, or, bearing a king's name (Stewart), covering for his Scots forebears by scapegoating the Jooos!

Obsession with money and valuables could just as well be Scots, who are also stereotyped as having unhandsome features. See, for example, JL Stevenson’s Kidnapped, with the miserly uncle who puts the story into motion.

I don’t care either, except to the extent that Jon Stewart is making a big deal out of it. My thoughts exactly re vendetta against Rowling for trans-phobia.

I’ve read through the later volumes of the series and seen the movies many times, with my kids and grandkids and for my own enjoyment. I don’t ever recall thinking: Hey! That’s anti-Semitic! They’re not wearing yarmulkas. They don’t speak Yiddish. So just their being highly professional fiduciaries of others’ money and valuables did not strike me as being particularly anti-Semitic.
