Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, grilled a senior FBI official on whether or not FBI agents or confidential informants played a role in the Capitol protest on Jan. 6, 2001, but she would not confirm nor deny anything.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled, "The Domestic Terrorism Threat One Year After January 6," Cruz asked Jill Sanborn, executive assistant director for the FBI's national security branch, about suspicions held by some that government officials encouraged lawless behavior during the protest.
"How many FBI agents or confidential informants actively participated in the events of Jan. 6?" Cruz asked.
Sanborn said in response that she could not discuss "the specifics of sources and methods" of the FBI.
Cruz then broadened his question by asking if any FBI agents or confidential informants actively participated in the riot.
"Sir, I can’t answer that," she said.
Cruz then asked if any agents or confidential informants committed crimes of violence on Jan. 6. When he received the same answer, he asked if any agents or confidential informants "actively encouraged" crimes of violence on Jan. 6.
"Sir, I can’t answer that."
Cruz then brought up Ray Epps, who was seen on video the day before the riot, telling a crowd, "Tomorrow, we need to get into the Capitol! Into the Capitol!" The crowd responded by shouting, "Fed! Fed! Fed!" at him.

"Miss Sanborn, was Ray Epps a fed?" Cruz asked.
"Sir, I cannot answer that question," Sanborn replied.
Cruz asked more questions about Epps' actions, and Sanborn said she could not answer.

21st century Reichstag fire.
If it was an FBI operation, then it was a domestic terrorist attack on the United States, perpetrated by leftist scum embedded deep into the bureaucracy of Fedgov.
The law firm of Waffle, Straddle, & Backfill has been advising the FBI team for some time now. Never answer a question directly, move to some arcane and very obscure observation, and gaze innocently back at the Senator making the inquiry.
Some of the finest Kabuki theater the world has ever seen.
Cruz trying to redeem himself by asking a question he already knows Sanborn won’t answer.
But we are the terrorist. Whatever, Ted.
Still have to make her not answer.
“The only acceptable answer to those questions is “No”.”
A lie is not acceptable.
A sincere message to journalists out there. Here we have a senior FBI official refusing to tell the U.S. Senate whether or not they actively participated in the events of Jan. 6. This seems worthy of at least honestly exploring, right? https://t.co/xiZgYvPXCV— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) January 11, 2022

“Cruz should’ve asked her why Garland and Wray didn’t have the guts to answer these simple questions, instead of sending out a clueless lackey.”
The reason is obvious; they could not truthfully answer the “not to my knowledge” question. Of course, lying is not a problem at all for those two; but the next Congress may take a far dimmer view of members of the executive branch lying to congresspeople.
The FBI was in on this of course but Ted put in a performance the FBI official put in their performance.
Change is needed action which I suspect will never happen.
You’re well practiced in missing the point.
I hate to bring this up, but very few here complained very loudly at all when these guys set up Muslim Americans. I’m not a big fan myself, but that’s not the point.
Now this might sound crazy, but Cruz is a very good attorney and good attorneys use their words carefully. I was really shocked that he might prejudice the trials of those still held in pre-trial detention by calling this a terrorist attack.
Could the terrorists have been some individuals who were NOT among those arrested? Could Cruz have been referring to someone or something else? Individuals in government agencies? I have no idea. Maybe I’m putting too much thought into this.
But it is an individual versus an organization. Does an organization that reports to the American people have the right to “not incriminate itself? “
It is a design of the Patriot Act. I can see the feds using this MO on Islamic terrorists and it probably worked pretty well. But there is a difference: the Islamic terrorists were mostly likely not US citizens and not given constitutional rights.
Surely you recognized my sarcasm?
“You’re well practiced in missing the point.”
I see my post went right over your head.
she did answer a key question at the end of that rumble video.
Cruz asked again if any FBI assets encouraged illegal activity on J6, and she replied, not to my knowledge.
Yes. But you bring up a good point and distinction. Good point!
