I’ve already sold my daughters; now, my kidney’: winter in Afghanistan’s slums
The Guardian ^ | 23 January 2022

The temperature is dropping to below zero in western Afghanistan and Delaram Rahmati is struggling to find food for her8children.

Since leaving the family home in the country’s Badghis province four years ago, the Rahmatis have been living in a mud hut with a plastic roof in one of Herat city’s slums. Drought made their village unliveable and the land unworkable. Like an estimated 3.5 million Afghans who have been forced to leave their homes, the Rahmatis now live in a neighbourhood for internally displaced people (IDP).

There are no jobs. But the 50-year-old has hospital fees to pay for two of her sons, one of whom is paralysed and the other who has mental illness, as well as medicine for her husband.

“I was forced to sell two of my daughters, an eight- and six-year-old,” she says. Rahmati says she sold her daughters a few months ago for 100,000 afghani each (roughly £700), to families she doesn’t know. Her daughters will stay with her until they reach puberty and then be handed over to strangers.

It is not uncommon in Afghanistan to arrange the sale of a daughter into a future marriage but raise her at home until it is time for her to leave. However, as the country’s economic crisis deepens, families are reporting that they are handing children over at an increasingly young age because they cannot afford to feed them.

Afghanistan is on the brink of “a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse”, according to the UN. The agency’s ambassador to Afghanistan has said it is “experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis of its contemporary history”. Drought, Covid-19 and the economic sanctions imposed after the Taliban seized power in August 2021 have had catastrophic consequences on the economy. Dramatic rises in inflation have resulted in soaring food prices.

I would like to feel sorry.

But after 20 years of trying to help the Afghans to stand on their own feet enough is enough.

Should have turned Afghanistan into glass in 2001.

Discouraging to be selling kidneys knowing you’ll be undercut by the Uighurs.

When I read the post this is exactly what I was thinking. This has been too often the case when we become involved in 3’rd world nation building.

When they sell their sons then they are truly in crisis. Selling daughters is not a big deal to these people. I would sell myself as a slave to feed my family if I had too. That’s the difference in the cultures, their girls are expendable.

It’s very sad, but it’s up to Afghans to get rid of the Taliban.

More sob stories with the intent of bringing in even more Afghani terrorists into this country.

We were never nation building. That was just a cover. It’s the minerals in Afghanistan everyone is after. Plus all the mega bucks Halliburton,Raytheon and a thousand others made supporting the fake war effort.

Just speaking from my 43 years of military service.

Just an observation:

This is a woman doing this, where is the man?

Very hard to imagine being in that position.

There, but for the grace of God, go you and I.

America squandered 1 TRILLION + dollars on building a better Afghanistan. Admittedly, most of it was stolen via fraud, but there was plenty of money to develop a defense force that could protect the country. Afghanistan squandered 20 years America's largess in money, economic development and defense aid and now the well is dry and America simply has no more capability to be bled dry in Afghanistan

If only they had some “kinder gentler” (as the liberals love to call them) taliban overlords to help them out or something

If anyone has ANY sympathy for any of these people, they/you need to have your head examined.

These people live in a country that can grow food, when others in the region cannot. Ergo, they could export food to other nations. You know? Commerce.

Instead they grown poppy for opium and then heroin production. Afghanistan is one of the worlds largest producers of opium on the planet and responsible for the majority of it in Europe.

They grow marijuana and hashish to sell throughout the world.

Now, due to the fact that they’ve discovered a plant that naturally produces an essential component of making Crystal Meth, they are now making meth.

They’re sitting on some of the largest deposits of raw materials and metals in the world.

I’m curious to know if any oil exploration has ever been done.

And in addition to all of that.....well over $2,000,000,000,000 US dollars was pumped into that country, I’m sure billions, if not trillions from other countries and they’re still eating dirt.

I won’t even get into the lives lost and injured. Because for those reasons alone, the place should be a parking lot and there shouldn’t be any stories about selling daughters and a kidney, as none of them should be alive to talk to the Guardian.
