BA.2 Omicron subvariant spreads more easily, but is not more severe

The emerging BA.2 Omicron subvariant does not appear to be more severe than the original BA.1 — but is more transmissible and more able to infect vaccinated people, according to reports.

The subvariant, one of at least four descendants of Omicron, has been detected in 57 countries since emerging in southern Africa 10 weeks ago, the World Health Organization said.

I agree...these variants are ridiculous and start the fear porn clock again.
It’s either a virus that follows the pattern of a virus (weakens as it mutates) or it’s altered in a lab and considered a bioweapon. Which is it?

I sincerely hope the spread of this “variant” proceeds way ahead of vaccination, and thus extends a natural immunity for most of the unvaccinated population. But then, the authorities should come to the recognition that the natural immunity from recovery from the disease, is far superior to the temporary and uncertain “immunity” provided by the mRNA vaccines, which only apparently actually work against the original strain of COVID-19 Wuhan virus.

If testing is to be done, it should be for the presence of antibodies, and not for the presence of the virus particles.

BA.2 Omicron must 4 or 5 trillion times more contagious than the original COVID 19 based on previous reports.

Agree. What happened in two years? In 2019 if you got a cold/flu you stayed home, had chicken soup, felt crappy for a few days and all was good.

TODAY, someone with the sniffles will stand in line or sit in their car for hours to get tested. They will still have the sniffles but feel empowered to know they have Covid. It’s almost like hypochondriacs are collecting “Test” merit badges.

Granted some people have a very bad case of Covid, but in my own observation the people being tested are expressing a warped form of virtue signaling. Kind of like Fakebook & Tweeter collecting “likes”

BA.2 is not a game changer. It is just Omicron in a hurry.

The same essential calculus applies - Omicron will quickly burn through the population, filling remaining gaps in immunity to an extraordinarily high level. Since BA.2 is 1.5 times as infectious as the original Omicron, it will eventually become dominant strain, as it has in Denmark.

Since it can infect marginally more of the vaccinated and previously infected than the original Omicron, it will penetrate a little deeper into the population.

The likely net result is a bit more of tail on the Omicron wave, not another wave itself.
