CLAYTON — Prosecutors on Monday dismissed charges against a St. Louis man in a July 2020 double shooting that left another dead at the St. Louis Galleria, concluding he did so in self-defense.
Jaron D. Lemmitt, 19, was set to stand trial this week in St. Louis County Circuit Court in the July 22, 2020, killing of Jaquan Steed at the mall in Richmond Heights.Prosecutors dismissed counts of second-degree murder and armed criminal action Monday after reviewing surveillance video that was unavailable at the time Lemmitt was charged and witness statements that Steed was the aggressor.
“In view of the totality of this evidence — in particular, the video evidence not available when charges were issued — we decided that Lemmitt acted in self-defense in shooting Steed and should not be prosecuted ...,” St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell said in a prepared statement.
Bell said filing charges against Lemmitt and later dismissing them was ethical “based on the evidence at our disposal on July 23, 2020,” and adhered to state and U.S. constitutional standards.
On Monday, St. Louis County Circuit Judge Ellen “Nellie” Ribaudo dismissed counts of first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the wounding of another man because authorities said that man, Terrell Cannamore, has been unwilling to cooperate with police and prosecutors.
The double shooting stemmed from an argument among two groups of people about 12:30 p.m. on the second floor of the mall, police said.
Steed, 21, was shot in the head and fell down the escalator; the other man, Cannamore, was shot in the upper arm. The shooting closed the mall, trapping some employees and shoppers in stores during a lockdown.
Police said that Steed’s group followed Lemmitt’s group down an escalator and that Lemmitt fired two shots, hitting the two men.

In the video it appears about four people attacked Steed on the escalator. They are all in white shirts.

That would be nuts. Gang dude or not. But, .gov holding onto evidence that would set ya free doesn’t win any awards.

Correct. However, we have to remember, that as long as blacks keep killing blacks and there is no prosecution, Margaret Sanger can rest easy. They are doing to themselves what she attempted to do a century ago.

I expect this won’t be the last arrest for Mr. Lemmitt, however.
