On voting rights, Biden’s power to act on his own is limited

WASHINGTON (AP) — As Republicans impose new restrictions on ballot access in multiple states, President Biden has no easy options for safeguarding voting rights despite rising pressure from frustrated activists.

Unlike on other issues such as immigration or environmental protection, the White House has little leverage without congressional action as the November elections creep up.

“If there were some sort of easily available presidential power on this, others would have done it,” said Nicholas Stephanopoulos, a Harvard Law School professor who researches election law. “There is no significant unilateral authority here.”

Nine months before elections that will determine control of Congress, voting rights advocates are worried there’s not enough time to fend off state laws and policies that make it harder to vote. They view the changes as a subtler form of past ballot restrictions such as literacy tests and poll taxes that were used to disenfranchise Black voters, a vital Democratic constituency.

Republicans last year pushed through 33 laws creating new voting limits in 19 states, and five other states have bills that seek to restrict voting. The effort is motivated in part by a growing and widespread denial of President Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss.

Republicans who have fallen in line behind Trump’s election lies are separately promoting efforts to influence future elections by installing sympathetic leaders in local election posts and by backing for elective office some of those who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“As Republicans impose new restrictions on ballot access in multiple states.”

You no propaganda there, somehow trying to ensure no one commits vote fraud is obviously restricting access.

I loathe these peoples ideology which warps them to such evil acts and intentions.

It’s time to reset the government to a limited power structure. Defund all the alphabet agencies and restrict Congress to their 18 enumerated powers as outlined in Article I.

"Republicans who have fallen in line behind Trump’s election lies"

"Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol."

Well, that's the AP for you.

” safeguarding voting rights”

False headline, false opening paragraph. More full on propaganda from the AP.

Not allowing dead people to vote, not allowing people to vote in multiple locations and states, not allowing people to have their votes cast for them by others, etc. is not restricting “voting rights” nor is allowing those things “safeguarding” voting rights.

What does he mean?

Paid activists get bussed in from other states to vote all the time.

Biden just has to claim he's regulating trade based on the Interstate Commerce Clause: stroke of the pen, law of the land.

The original Constitution limits were ignored almost at once by politicians including Presidents.

The list of abuses is long and I believe began with the central government response to the Whiskey Rebellion, then Jackson relocation of the Cherokee.Lincoln insisted on a War and invading the South, later the Spanish American war over a probable coal dust explosion, Teddy Roosevelt’s executive orders creating national parks (a land grab), and Wilson’s violation of American neutrality by secretly supplying ammunition bto the English Empire. With the deaths of people foolish enough to book passage to a war zone used as justification for United States entry into WWI..to the more historical recent gun control EPA,and myriad Alphabet agencies of the 20th century.

Those with power always want more.

I think the Democrats, the swamp, their media and academics are setting the stage to invalidate the November elections.

I also have no doubt, they will do any and every thing possible to steal this one also.

This article is a pretty good looking glass into the kind of news you get from fully developed communist regimes.

Shortly before the November election, Biden will announce some totally invalid executive order requiring mail in ballots, ballot harvesting, and prohibiting any ID requirements to vote.

Obama district judges in California and Hawaii will then enter nationwide injunctions enforcing Biden’s order. By the time it makes it to the Supreme Court, the election will be over.

Does anyone believe the AP? I assume the AP would do away with all requirements for IDs and in person checks. What about banking, alcohol purchases, air planes, hotels, gun purchases, etc.

Somewhere around 85% of Americans support Voter ID laws, there simply is no popular support for making voting “easier”.
