Carbon pricing now forcing U.K. electricity prices higher Government policy pushing up cost of fossil fuel generation

While some of the recent energy price rises have been due to international market factors, part is the direct result of government policy.

I mentioned the role of carbon pricing a few months ago in pushing up the cost of electricity. Since then carbon prices have jumped even higher to £84.50 per tonne. Two years ago they were trading at below £15/tonne (via the EU scheme).

This increase has been deliberately engineered by government, in order to push up the cost of fossil fuel generation so as to make expensive renewables competitive. The policy is also to track EU carbon prices, which have also rocketed in the last two years.

This is the reason I put a fairly large solar system onto my house. Though this story is about the UK, the Dims here are doing the same kind of thing to our energy prices. My solar system provides a hedge against it by producing over half the power I need in my now all-electric house. I basically grumble about energy costs about half as much as I used to. I also worry less about utility bills as I tighten down my budget in preparation for retirement.

Imaginary solutions to an imaginary problem will bankrupt those foolish enough to believe that CO2 is a danger.

Aaaaand that is exactly, what is going to happen here, which is why the left are pushing for electric everything. They say “but electricity can be used during .ow usage times to save money, and it’s actually cheaper than fuel now” yeah? Well as soon as everyone is forced to go electric, there won’t be any low usage hours any longer, as everyone will be constantly recharging to keep everything topped off.

Once they force everyoneminto onto electric everything, then they can raise the prices and there is no choice but to pay, and they Wil, also be forced to continue paying carbon taxes fines and regulations too. Electric needs carbon for, production, so the left will still claim that using electricity is selfish and uncaring aboutmthe environment, and so,taxes and fines and regulations are needed

One world gov Control needs everyone hooked into electric only, as they can easily control and even shut off peoples supply to it at will.

Ny announced that no new buildings can contain wood or nat gas heating or whatever. It must be electric. And it wouldn’t surprise me if they announced that all old buildings must convert to electric soon after the ,aw is on the books

That’s going to require an awful lot of wind to generate power to heat those buildings. LOL

preparation for retirement

Many people downsize, or end up having to vote with their feet to a warm place that likes them. With subsidies, solar is still often a 20 year stay-put bet to break even. Most of us here are lucky to have 20 years left, having the same 4 walls to stare at or not.

Yup. The left are insane- they truly want us back in the caveman days, only no fire to cook and heat allowed

I'm retiring in my 50's, my financial plan has to account for a long retirement (Good Lord willing). Plus I live in Alabama -- great sunshine, the sun is out when you need it most (i.e. A/C is needed more during the day in the spring through fall, which consumes more power than needed for the heater in the winter at night), and my wife and I like having a large house for our grown kids and their families to visit.

So far with the past year's worth of performance, the only downside is opportunity cost. If I had used that HELOC money to invest in the market it would have made more than the "return" I'm getting on the solar project.

Carbon credit prices are going up. Folks who invented their economic fiction tend to like higher tax rates. So tax the heck out of holders of carbon credits. Cut all the subsidies to green goodies. Plus require them to have reserve funds to repair their foot print when no longer useable, like the greens require for mines. If they are useful and competitive without subsidies and can cover their full life cost, than more power to them.
