An autoloader would have some merit, but for me I'd choose something that cannot jam, viz. the over/under. Rifle sights. With someone accompanying with the 45-70, two shots would be fine.

Then again, I've never had to find out. I might wish I had that 3rd and 4th shot from your autoloader, in real life.

I can’t believe the shot gun was loaded with bird shot and not slugs.

True, but the firing pin now floats inside the hammer, and doesn’t engage unless the trigger is pressed, so there’s that added security with a modernized design.

Of course, look what happened with Alec Baldwin and his “defective” pistol.

I suppose he could have panicked and been unable to work the slide release. If the safety were off, the trigger would have worked as well.

That shot placement with the .44 looks about worthless. The buckshot is more impressive than I would have expected.

I suspect they were hoping to get some birds for supper. It's customary for big game hunters to hunt overlapping seasons. Even go fishing in the down time.

But yeah, he should have been loaded for bear when they went to recover the elk.

That shot placement with the .44 looks about worthless.

Right next to or through the spine, into the thoracic cavity, possibly through the heart, does not seem worthless to me.

Looks high in the diagram. Not sure what angle the shot entered at.

At the end of he article, there are pictures of the necropsy showing the path of the bullet with a straight stick through the wound channel.

Shot to shot recovery time with the .45-70 can be quite long. Sometimes too long for dealing with large dangerous animals; I’ve heard of some guys going out into the South Texas bush with pretty much that loadout against feral hogs and sometimes they don’t all come back intact. Survivors indicated that they needed more ammo and faster firing weapons.

I don’t hunt per se, but I’ve participated in some hog extermination events and occasionally have to go into hog country. My preferred loadout for that is a FAL in 7.62 NATO or a Saiga 12 with a 12 round drum magazine stagger loaded with 00 Buck and solid copper slugs.
