A CIA Cold Warrior on the Intelligence War Over Ukraine
New / Lines Magazine ^ | 23-FEB-2022 | Michael Weiss

Yesterday, at a prerecorded meeting of Russia’s Security Council, President Vladimir Putin sat listless and slumped in his chair, far away from his gallery of boyars, pretending to weigh their counsel before launching a pre-scripted war against Ukraine. He was not impressed when Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, stammered and flubbed his lines, confusing the present and future tenses. “Speak clearly, Sergei!” Putin admonished him.

Then Naryshkin got ahead of himself, and everyone else, by saying he supported incorporating the Russian-occupied territories of Donbas, east Ukraine, into the Russian Federation. “That’s not what we’re discussing!” Putin snarled. “We’re talking about whether to recognize their independence or not.”

Maybe. But Brezhnev didn’t colonize Afghanistan with Russian civilians.

Putin is almost certain to colonize Ukrainian areas with Russian loyalists.

It’s a historical tradition.

“I think Putin will regret the Ukrainian War.”

Different animal.

According to the 2001 census, ethnic Ukrainians form 58% of the population of Luhansk Oblast and 56.9% of Donetsk Oblast. Ethnic Russians form the largest minority, accounting for 39% and 38.2% of the two oblasts respectively.[58] Modern Donbas is a predominately Russophone region. According to the 2001 census, Russian is the main language of 74.9% of residents in Donetsk Oblast and 68.8% in Luhansk Oblast.[59] The proportion of native Russian-speakers is higher than ethnic Russians because some ethnic Ukrainians and other nationalities also indicate Russian as their mother tongue.[citation needed]

https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2022/02/europe/russia-ukraine-crisis-poll-intl/index.html

The question: “Russia and Ukraine should be one country?”

Western Ukraine - 1%.
Eastern Ukraine - 18%.

Not many Ukrainians want to be “united” with Russia.

The question: ““Russians and Ukrainians are ‘one people’”
Western Ukraine - 15%,
Eastern Ukraine - 48%.

No majority in any region.

Don’t move the goalposts.

Russians are almost 40% of the Donbas region and Russian is the predominant language. Very different animal compared to Afghanistan.

I don’t think that’s the issue.

I believe what Putin wants above all is a guarantee that Ukraine is never going to be a member of NATO, with the capability of positioning troops up to the Russian border.

Is it too much to ask? Would we allow masses of Russian and Chinese armies in Mexico, even though Mexico is a sovereign country? I think not.

while I agree that much of the Donbas is populated by ethnic Russians, the population is increasingly nationalistic Ukrainian with every kilometer you move West. Most of the Ukrainians I know do not think of themselves as “Junior Russians” but are proudly, patriotically Ukrainian.

I don’t blame Russians for thinking the cultures of Ukraine, the United States, and Israel might make for better living.

https://www.nytimes.com/1994/09/29/us/no-cia-officers-will-be-dismissed-over-double-agent.html

The Director of Central Intelligence said today that no one would be dismissed or demoted for the “systemic failure” of the Central Intelligence Agency in the case of Aldrich H. Ames, the spy for Moscow who flourished inside the C.I.A. for nine years.

Instead, the Director, R. James Woolsey, said he was sending letters of reprimand to 11 former and present C.I.A. officials, including his director of clandestine operations, Ted Price. . .

Though Mr. Woolsey would not identify the 10 other people he reprimanded, they included the agency’s Deputy Inspector General, Burton Gerber, who ran the Soviet operations division. . .

And since the Revolution, the US is a majority English speaking nation. So using your logic, if Great Britain decides to retake us, we English speakers are going to support the British invasion?

Don’t you understand that when Putin completes the takeover of Ukraine, then his border moves west to the Western border of Ukraine, where he will again complain about NATO on his border? History keeps repeating itself, yet people insist this time it will be different...

There’s a lot of speculation about what Putin really wants from this.

I think he knows, or I hope he does, that a full-blown occupation of Ukraine would be too costly, and that merely getting the guarantee of no NATO troops in Ukraine, would at least satisfy people back home. From a political standpoint, any Russian leader that allowed NATO troops to be up on the Ukrainian/Russian border, would not be in power for very long.

Are you kidding? Almost immediately Putin brought up nukes. He’s nuts. That’s not the behavior of someone sane or even looking out for their own self-interest much less their country’s.

The war mongers like whatever backs up their love for lots of wars.

CNN likes wars that RATS beget, but hate wars the RINOs beget.

Most people just hate all wars.
