Ukraine's foreign minister accuses Russia of starting a full-scale war, and urges the UN "to do everything possible" to stop it
BBC Kyiv correspondent James Waterhouse says a Ukrainian government official has given an indication of the breadth of the Russian military action so far.
The official says there have been cruise missile strikes launched this morning on Kyiv, as well as troop movements in Odessa to the south of the country.
Troops have also been crossing the border in Kharkiv, about 25 miles from the Russian border, the official says.
Early signs according to witnesses and government officials are that this is something quite large-scale, Waterhouse says.
There are also multiple reports from local media citing Ukraine's Interior Ministry which says some of the missile strikes have attacked Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv.
Russia's defence ministry has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

Господи помилуй! (Gospodi, pomiluy)
Lord, have mercy!
I guess Russia wants a land corridor (and water supply) to Crimea. Do they go to the Dnieper?
That, a land corridor, seems to be the aim. However right now they are still in the donbas region.
Interesting, gospodyni in Polish means host. Pan means Lord. In polski it would be panie zmiłuj się nad nami

Honestly I’m surprised. I didn’t think Putin would go beyond Donetsk/Luhansk…but even the mainland is in the crosshairs. This is so very disturbing.

Just heard a Russian aircraft went down.
“Church language” and everyday parlance can be very different.
We have the situation with Greek.
No one wants to say it but the only thing that might deter Putin and Xi is an actual military red line. That could have been in Western Ukraine if the world had reacted more quickly, rather than Biden immediately evacuating.
The danger of a wider war is that we retreat from conflicts and display weakness until we finally have to stand and fight.
Biden is tailor made for our enemies because he thinks “of course” we can’t fight Russia and China, so he’ll keep doing the “logical” thing and letting them seize territory.
But they won’t limit themselves to the countries where our treaty obligations are unclear, because we are the ultimate target.
CNN shows footage of tanks crossing the border from Belarus into Ukraine
Perhaps it’s beginning to dawn on us that Putin is acting crazy at this point, and he’s threatening military action against us.
I expect Polish troops to move into West Ukraine fairly soon.
This will be no military cakewalk.
Furthermore, attacking fellow Eastern Slavs who are also Orthodox Christians is morally a big hit for Russians

Yes, but Taiwan is far more difficult to invade than Ukraine
No, they are bombing Kyiv’s airports right now and allegedly downtown Kyiv. In fact, there are major explosions being reported in dozens of cities from the West to the East.
This is not about the land corridor. They are taking out the government, saying the Jewish President is leading a Nazi country, and that Ukraine must be demilitarized.
It is full scale. Odessa and Mariupol reporting amhibious assaults and the landing of troops. Russian tanks reported moving in from Belarus and the Russian border.
