Once a year the NSGA would cover all of the TS gear and boards and have an open house.   It was fantastic to see the giant scopes that were on the end of those amazingly large Rotating Log Periodic Antennas.

It’s easier to say than “some dude on twitter said”.

The Happy Station on sundays on Radio Nederland, Radio Cairo’s “Mailbag program”, Tropical music from South America during a snowstorm in the northeast, international flights over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, BBC World Service, Dr Vernon McGee, Dr Gene Scott, HCJB Quito Ecuador, WYFR (Family Radio), Radio Tahiti (a treasure to pick up), West Africa and its exotic music, “at the tone 23:00 hours coordinated universal time”, Voice of Vietnam, Radio Free China, Taipei, Taiwan. This was all during the time when Radio Kiev was communism and under Soviet control along with several other nations that are now part of NATO.

I used to leave my radio on Radio Australia overnight, 9.580 MHz, signal sounded like is was coming from across town.

I would also leave it on AFRTS, you could get all kinds of sports on it.

I enjoyed the Commie stations too, Radio Tirana was always good for a few unitentional laughs.

“I used to leave my radio on Radio Australia overnight”

I’ve done that several times. It was the last station I tuned into and fell asleep to it. I’d be going to sleep and they’d already be in tomorrow afternoon’s ride home from work.

Well, the first comment listed them, but even without that, I remembered most of them. I always liked the rather heroic anthem of Radio Tirana. I listened frequently for a long time because I was fascinated by Albania’s oddness. I remember they used to broadcast translations of Stalin’s speeches.

Probably my favorite interval signal was Radio RSA.

The most entertaining SW listening was the English broadcast of Radio Peking during the Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution in the mid-60s.

Yep, and they would always start the broadcast with a quotation from Chairman Mao.

I was also listening live in 1989 during the crackdown, when the announcers were saying that the crackdown was happening, and that several employees of Radio Beijing were killed. The next hour, they replaced him with a new announcer toeing the government line.

Yep.

I also liked the Radio Kiev one, very haunting. Makes me think of what’s going on now.

And of course Radio Nederland........This is the actually carillion in Hilversum they recorded it on.

The song is called ‘Merck toch hoe sterck’ (Notice how strong)

That was a little before I started listening. But that was another great thing about SW — getting that kind of international drama straight from the horse’s mouth. In college I did a paper on the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. In my research I came across transcripts of Radio Prague broadcasts. Those would have been good too.
