NBC News: As Biden leads free world against Putin, Trump equivocates
NBC News / Comcast ^ | March 2, 2022 | By Jonathan Allen (D-NBC)

WASHINGTON — It is rare that a president can show he is living up to the mantle of "leader of the free world" — and even less common for him to do so against the backdrop of his main political rival praising an autocrat.

But that's what President Joe Biden did during his first State of the Union address, highlighting how he has led the Western world in defending Ukraine against Russia's invasion.

"Six days ago, Russia’s Vladimir Putin sought to shake the very foundations of the free world, thinking he could make it bend to his menacing ways. But he badly miscalculated," Biden said to a roaring, bipartisan standing ovation on the House floor Tuesday night.

And, just hours before the applause washed over Biden, Trump complained that Republicans, Democrats and the news media "misinterpret" his remarks about Ukraine — even as he again declined to directly criticize Putin.

Wherever Trump stands, it is not with Biden's anti-Putin legion. Biden is at the forefront of a global coalition that has isolated the Russian strongman, levied debilitating sanctions on him and rallied to provide aid and moral support to Ukrainian fighters.

It was savvy of Biden to start his speech with the section on Ukraine because even casual viewers would see images of Republicans and Democrats applauding as he led the American government in making a forceful statement of support.

But if there was any doubt about the larger role Biden sees himself in, he clarified by using the phrase "free world" three times.

"The free world is holding him accountable," Biden said. "When the history of this era is written, Putin’s war on Ukraine will have left Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger."

And if the free world is stronger, so is its leader.

I share your understanding of the situation.

I’ll add, also, that the phony Steele Dossier that they created, tried to smear Trump with some kind of collusion with Russia. A collusion, which I believe is their own and is playing out, now.

I am not in any way a fan of Russia or Putin—I stood on the East Germany Border as a young tanker looking over to the Potemkin villages at OP Romero and OP India. I knew my battle positions across the Fulda River and knew that we had two firing positions and if still alive the third was at will.

I trained to fight the Soviets (Which are still the Russians).

I am rooting for the Ukranians to defeeat the Soviet incurision into their “country” I say that qwith apostrosphe marks because after WW2, lines were redrawn for Poland as well as Ukraine to create buffer zones.

I understand the Soviet position of wanting at least a neutral buffer country between them and NATO. Doesn’t mean I agree with it, but I understand it. I also think that the west pushed the Soviets into this action with its dangling of NATO membership to Ukraine, which through out much of history has been loosely or firmly attached to Russia.

In my opinion, Ukraine should have declared itself a neutral country with no affiliation to anyone, say Switzerland. But that did not happen.

It will be a difficult line to provide defensive arms to Ukraine while at the same time, avoid being drug into the conflict. If say, the former Soviet block countries that are now part of NATO wish to actually join the conflict without the backing of NATO, then so be it. But as of this moment, the United States should do all it can to remain out of the actual fighting.

I do not like Joe Biden, I do not like Democrats, etc...but sanctions are about all that we can do right now without actually jlining the conflict. We can discuss whether Biden’s sanctions are real or useful—but in theory for this conflict, I belive sanctions are the way to go.

As for China, do we not have a long standing defense agreement with Taiwan? That hot zone is quite different that Ukraine and requres different reactions. The ultimate goal though, for both the Ukrainian and upcoming Tawainese conflict is to avoid Atomic War. I am selfish in that I wish to have my remaining years conflict free and radioactive free.

If it were me, when the Soviet Union brokeup, I would have broken of Western Ukraine, the part that belonged to Austria-Hungary, and still has mostly Hungarian speakers and some Polish residents, and created a separate country, say “The Republic of Ruthenia”, which could have joined NATO, then the rest of Ukraine would have had an Austria-like policy of neutrality.

One of the main reasons the Ukrainians have been able to resist is the javelin anti-tank missiles that Trump sent them. NBC won’t mention that.

That actually might work. Though I wonder if those Hungarian speakers now feel more Ukrainian then Ruthenian. (Russia/USSR’s past behavior recruited well for Ukrainian nationalism!) Also how many are actually left?

You need to reinstate using the photo of Herr Goebbels to demonstrate the blatant media propaganda.

Lets hope that they get to the bottom of it. The Democrats at Hillary’s level are very dirty and lie and they are hypocrites. The worst kind of people. Even worse is that the MSM allow them to be that way. So in some respects the MSM are worse. The MSM are supposed to keep the politicians honest and they fail at their job.

Utter gaslighting garbage. Biden is funding the Russian invasion and refuses to stop giving Russia $1 Billion a day for oil that was being produced in the US before he shut it down.

How about this direct quote, you two pinheads?:

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine—of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful. So, Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s the strongest peace force. We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy, I know him very well. Very, very well.”
