Financial services companies Visa and Mastercard announced Saturday they are suspending business in Russia in response to the country’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

"Effective immediately, Visa will work with its clients and partners within Russia to cease all Visa transactions over the coming days," Visa said in a press release. "Once complete, all transactions initiated with Visa cards issued in Russia will no longer work outside the country and any Visa cards issued by financial institutions outside of Russia will no longer work within the Russian Federation."

Al Kelly, chairman and chief executive officer of Visa Inc., said in the statement that the company feels "compelled to act" following Russia’s "unprovoked invasion of Ukraine" and the "unacceptable events that we have witnessed."

"We regret the impact this will have on our valued colleagues, and on the clients, partners, merchants and cardholders we serve in Russia," Kelly said. "This war and the ongoing threat to peace and stability demand we respond in line with our values."

This conflicts with the previous story that said the cancelling everyone’s credit was because of sanctions. Here they are saying they are doing it on their own and it is due to their feelings and values.

More evidence — as if any were needed — that the people can never let government force us into digital currency.

Yup—it is also a reminder that credit cards have you at their mercy—these can choose to stop doing business with you for any reason—and without giving you a reason—and you have no recourse.

(I learned this the hard way years ago...)

Will Visa and MasterCard suspend operations in China when they invade Taiwan?

Why do I think that they won't?

Yep. Credit card processors cancelled Trump’s campaign website and their Family Business store in 2020.

China will be watching carefully.

If (as I suspect) these businesses quietly reverse course after the current “unpleasantness” in the Ukraine is resolved, then China will know they have the green light and can just expect temporary sanctions.

All conservatives are the end game. Won’t be able to buy or sell. Meanwhile the commies in China work the cards overtime. Can’t the rush to war fools see this

“More evidence — as if any were needed — that the people can never let government force us into digital currency.”

Always keep a years worth of necessity cash on hand.
eg food and fuel costs.

For example, if the Russians really wanted an easy war, just
cut power, internet, and blockade Ukraine, then wait it out.
Only need to invade enough to control those functions.
