The CIA director said Putin premised his war on four false assumptions: he thought Ukraine was weak, he believed Europe was distracted and wouldn't mount a strong response, he thought Russia's economy was prepared to withstand sanctions, and that Russia's military had been modernized and would fight effectively.
"He's been proven wrong on every count," said Burns, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2005-8.

Putin will not go nuclear. There’s nothing for Russia to gain by using nukes on a Ukrainian city and given that a lot of Russians are from Ukraine and fond of it he’ll irreversibly alienate these people for life.
Putin through one of his lackeys floated the idea of firing a Russian nuke at the United States Nevada test range to prove some absurd point. The US simply restated our long standing policy that we do not believe in limited nuclear war. Any nuclear attack on the US will result in a full retaliatory attack on Russia.
It would be national suicide for Putin to give the nuclear order and I doubt his generals love him so much that they’d kill their country in order to demonstrate their loyalty to a madman.
But I do not believe Putin to be a madman. Just a sociopath.
So stop worrying about WMD. It’s highly unlikely. It would also be bad for business.
As a FR Puntinista on another thread said to me, “You can’t be that stupid!”.
Ah but I am every bit that stupid.
And America is every bit that stupid.
Sure Putin was really stupid to invade Ukraine.
He thought that gave him a monopoly on stupid.
Putin flashed his nuclear weapons and thought we would think him even more stupid.
Putin thought the west would rationally assess Putin’s stupidity and choose not to out stupid him.
But Putin was stupidly wrong.
America is prepared to out stupid Putin every bit of the way.
The faster Putin get’s it through his thick KGB skull that he has been and will be outstupided at every turn.
The faster we can put this whole stupid nasty chapter to bed.
But has he really?
If Russia wanted to invade, Russia would have invaded.
Y'know what this reminds me of?
The Faukland Islands fiasco !
Night after night of 5 color maps and and endless droning of the creeping progress while the "worlds greatest navy" mobilizes on plywood planked Queen Elizabeth 2 (plywood to protect the carpets) . . .
. . . . . . . all to protect some sheep that were sovereign !
Russia, Russia, Russia
A three part harmony of Russia, Ukraine and the US continuing to launder money via the biden crime family !
There are a lot of other players here than Putin and Biden.
All are flawed, but most regimes involved are more capable than the current US leadership. And save for nukes Russia really isn’t much of a military power.
NPR...
Unreal.
Russia is make steady progress on the ground, while the US government is destroying the US economy with its inflation and energy policy.
Who is losing again?
Has direct access to the CIA?
ROFLOL!!!
NPR and the CIA. What’s not to like?
It was the CIA/ IC that was telling us it would be a Russian cakewalk. All I now is that Russia is still in Ukraine, still fighting, and not begging for foreign aid.
Anything to support the narrative.....
I don’t believe that. I support Ukraine, but once the Russians have it, I think they can subdue most of the population.
Yep, when you distill it down to the facts and remove the media noise, that's where you end up.
Well, initial Rusdian operations certainly looked like they were assuming Ukraine was weaker than it turned out to be. The only part of the initial operation that came off as planned was the breakout from the Crimea up the Perekop Isthmus, a natural defensive position that they blew through without a halt, apparently because the Ukrainian defenders simply fled. Thats how they got to Kherson so quick. But they did not manage to relieve their airborne troops in the airports around Kiev.
Never, ever believe anything a Bushbot says.
“If Russia wanted to invade, Russia would have invaded.”
Newsflash: Russia HAS invaded Ukraine.
Still fighting does not mean things have gone well.
The Germans were “still fighting” to take Stalingrad right up to the moment Operation Uranus started. And the Germans, unlike the Soviets, were not begging for aid either.
Where this will go is anyones guess.
There was no election fraud so we don’t need any investigation. The Jan 6th protest was an insurrection. Covid occurred naturally. Masks don’t work. Masks will work. The US didn’t fund gain of function. The “vaccine” will be 100% effective. Does anybody care what they say?
Or do what NATO did in Serbia. Just literally bombed the %$*% out of them.
Russia would just haul off half the populace to work in labor camps if its that problematic to occupy Ukraine.
They’re already a pariah nation. So the next thing Russians will do is reestablish Siberian work camps.
