Ukrainian nationalist forces have committed a new and "extremely dangerous provocation," attacking a substation and the power lines which provide the Chernobyl nuclear power plant with electricity, Russian deputy defence minister Nikolai Pankov has said.

The officer said Russian specialists have taken the necessary measures to transition to reserve diesel generators on site at Chernobyl.
Russian Deputy Minister of Energy Pavel Sorokin indicated that Russia’s Belarusian colleagues have worked out a means to restore electricity supplies to the plant on a permanent basis by connecting it to the Belarusian energy system.

The irony of this is that this is the scenario they were testing for back in 1986 when they destroyed one of the reactors and caused the largest single nuclear accident in history. (so far)
The idea is/was - loss of power *to* the plant meant no power for the cooling pumps. There are diesel generators on site to provide backup power to the pumps, but these take a minute or two to come on and up to power. The SOP for this is to immediately disconnect from the power grid (providing power out). There is a lot of rotational inertia (ie. energy) in the turbines and generators. As these wind down, being disconnected from the grid, they can provide the interim power to the pumps to keep the cooling water flowing until the diesel generators come up.
This procedure is what they were testing when they screwed it up and ended up melting down (or blowing up) the reactor. Scott Manley does a great YouTube video explaining the physics behind the screwup. Spoiler alert - part bad design, part real bad decisions by the people running the test.
Anyway, it is a little eerie to hear they have done things that caused the exact scenario they were testing that led to so much mayhem. I guess they learned their lessons and were able to do a controlled shutdown this time.

The “Jewish Ukrainian Nazi” thing is the correct read on the Russian propaganda that they’re using in part to justify their war on Ukraine. They’ve asserted that the Ukrainians are Nazis. But the so-called ‘Nazis’ must be pretty bad Nazis since they freely elected a Jewish guy as President.
It’s akin to how the Democrats call the Proud Boys a bunch of ‘skinhead racists’ when the Proud Boys elected a black Puerto Rican guy as their president.
