Tuesday was a historic day for the trans community in Northern California.
Cristina Arias became the first transgender woman in the region to receive her amended birth certificate recognizing her chosen gender identity.
As of January, all Mexican consulates in the United States began to issue amended birth certificates to transgender Mexican people without having to travel to the country.
Arias immigrated to Sacramento five years ago from the Mexican state of Jalisco.
"I believe that being a woman goes beyond a biological body,” Arias said. “I do not believe that being a woman is reduced to a womb, and I believe that none of the above define what it is to be a woman, because being a woman, is an essence, is an energy – is perceived. You carry it in your heart, you feel it in your soul, and it lives in your mind since the first day consciousness arrives in your life.”
The Mexican government changed the policy as of Jan. 15. Among the requirements to obtain a certified copy of their birth certificate, Mexican nationals have to provide proof of identity and submit an application at their nearest consulate office.
"It's an issue of human rights," Liliana Ferrer, the consul general of Mexico in Sacramento, previously told KCRA 3. "The Mexican government has thought of the concept of inclusivity and how important it is to protect our most vulnerable communities."
Arias has said that three months after moving to Sacramento, three of her friends who were also transgender women were murdered as a result of hate crimes.
She said that having her Mexican documents match up with the legal name on her American documents will help to start the process to get a master's degree in the U.S.
You can reach the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento online or by calling 916-441-3287.
If you can pick whatever you want to be, why even bother with birth certificates? Or maybe give folks a blank one, let them fill it in any way they choose.

Medmal on the horizon when patient gets emergency care and is received as the fantasy person.
I’m guessing the amended it in pink crayon.
So can I amend my birth certificate to being born Mexican and get all the money and benefits thrown at me that they do when they illegally enter our country?
Really bad things happen when governments pretend things to be true that aren’t true:
Witch hunts pretended that people could be witches.
Slavery pretended that blacks aren’t people.
Holocaust pretended that Jews aren’t people.
Abortion pretends that preborn people aren’t people.
And now pretending that homosexuality is normal.
For people who don’t understand Birth Certificates:
Penis = Male
Vagina = Female
If you’re still confused I offer a class on Gender Identification for a tuition of only $2000/hr for a 10 hour course.
This is why those states passing or debating laws on athletic participation being based on birth certificates won’t work.
That's also true, isn't it?
If not: Why not?
Regards,
Good question. In the same vein Why have a legal document that documents a physical true event and product (birth), and allow it to be changed to a perceived or a wish that the event or product is wanted to be?
Master’s degree? Wouldn’t a Mistress’s’ degree be more appropriate?
How was his genitalia changed?
Some countries will throw them in Prison for carrying Fake Documents , just watch
Is she here legally?
I demand Mexico have a box to check for broccoli.
I see myself as born in Guam, Puerto Rico, or Hawaii.
What Califoria form number is necessary to make the change?
I’m sure they’re not doing that to facilitate illegal immigration.
Years ago on CSI Miami there was a show that couldn’t be made today, where the agents were looking all over for an individual by his DNA; but he or she had transitioned to the other sex, so they couldn’t identify the perp for the first 50 minutes of the show.
At the time, it was just presented matter-of-factly—law enforecement was stumped by a new problem. Today, if such a plot were shown at all, the cops would be shamed and punished and there would be triumphant virtue signalling.
I thought it was illegal to lie on government issued certificates.
