MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WKRG/AP) — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed House Bill 272, known as the Constitutional carry bill or permitless carry bill, into law. The bill will go into effect on Jan. 1.

“Unlike states who are doing everything in their power to make it harder for law abiding citizens, Alabama is reaffirming our commitment to defending our Second Amendment rights,” said Ivey in a news release on Thursday. “I have always stood up for the rights of law abiding gunowners, and I am proud to do that again today.”

I really wasn't sure if they would get it done. I'm proud to say my state rep sponsored the bill. Of course, I just got my renewed permit in the mail today.

Yee Haw Mee-Maw~! I’ve had my carry permit for about 10+ years now and renew 5 years at a time here in AL and will still renew for traveling into nearby/other states.

The first one they were really extremely backed up and took awhile for approval from the local Sheriff’s office . . . this was during the Obama years when everybody was getting one.

Then got my kids one when they turned 21, well daughter @ 21 and 3 1/2 years younger son, they changed it to 18 when he was about 19 so got it then.

Believe that’s the standard statutory effective date for legislation in that state. Texas does something similar except it’s in September, IIRC.

Also, they probably need the training time for LEO in that state. When Texas went ConCarry, the cops needed to be retrained regarding the law.

Lots of states have statutory in-effect dates, so unless a bill specified otherwise, which may require extraordinary effort, anything passed in a session goes into effect on the same date.

I got my first permit in Montgomery in 1983. You had to jump through some hoops back then. My son got his when he was 18, but they did hassle him a little (Mobile County). He had to prove he was either a full time student or employed. That’s not actually in the law but we went with it (he was a full time student) and it only slowed the process by a couple of days. In Mobile we have an online renewal which is very good. I’m not sure if I’ll renew next time or not. I don’t travel except infrequently to Mississippi or Florida.

“Jan 1?”

I have to admit I did not catch that. That’s pretty ridiculous, but at least they did it. Renewing my permit was not a waste after all.

Money. Sherries didn’t want to lose the permit issue fee. If you need to carry out of state in a reciprocal state, you still need a permit.

Always think about the $. Who loses vs who gains. Sherries sided with the anti gun people for 40k-100k per year in permit fees. Dumb asses.

We’re way up in Madison County. I think they’ve recently started doing online renewals but still have to pick up in person. Son is 24 now so it has been a few years since his first permit.

Yes, I think you are right on Sept 1 for new laws in Texas. I still remember when my brother turned 18 and could buy beer legally and it changed Sept 1 to 21 so from June 22 to Sept 1 he could buy it. LOL This was a long time ago, in the 80’s.
