Germany plans to buy up to 35 US-made F-35 fighter jets and 15 Eurofighter jets, a parliamentary source said Monday, as part of a major push to modernise the armed forces in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The F-35 jets made by Lockheed Martin would replace Germany's decades-old Tornado fleet, according to media reports confirmed by the source.
Tornados are the only Luftwaffe planes capable of carrying US nuclear bombs stationed in Germany that are a key part of NATO deterrence.

The German Army currently has fewer than 75 operational jets and 200 main battle tanks. The entire standing Army is 1/5th the size of Ukraine’s Army.
They expect the American Army to defend them.

Correct, but that was always what we and the other western nations wanted them to do.
There is always that worry that once a German goes to fetch Grandad’s old uniform from the attic things might not go well for the world.
They’re ordering 35 and Finland has already ordered 63.

Here's a slice of perspective for you: Poland, with an economy nearly 1/4th the size of Germany's, already has on order 32 F-35As.
Let them spend themselves into oblivion. China and Russia are going to do the same thing to Europe that Reagan did to the USSR.

I thought the Europeans were all one big happy union family over there now? Stand as one for Ukraine, their European brothers and what not? Wouldn't the rest of Europe feel totally comfortable with their German brothers being armed to the teeth again? Shouldn't they all be armed to the max? After all, the Hitler of the 21st century is at their door.
Put it in the price of the fighters and their maintenance.
I agree. Germany and Japan should have been claimed as American territories with American governance. Spoils of war. Why is it we tend to give back so often?
Germany should never have anything besides a constabulary and coastal rescue force.
