Other than giving Putin (now false) confidence, I don’t think that was a major factor. Basically it was now or never for him regarding keeping Ukraine neutral. No different than Cuba in 1963...either take action or accept the military threat on your border.

Oh, I do know the groups involved in the Arab Spring in Aleppo, and anyone who even paid the slightest attention should recognize, FSA, Al Qaeda, Nour Al Din Al Zenki, ISIL.
