Drivers of bigger vehicles such as pickup trucks and SUVs are more likely to hit pedestrians while making turns than drivers of cars, according to a new study.
The research released Thursday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety points to the increasing popularity of larger vehicles as a possible factor in rising pedestrian deaths on U.S. roads. The authors also questioned whether wider pillars holding up roofs of the larger vehicles make it harder for drivers to spot people walking near the corners of vehicles.
“The link between these vehicle types and certain common pedestrian crashes points to another way that the increase in SUVs on the roads might be changing the crash picture,” said Jessica Cicchino, a study author and vice president of research for the institute.
Although the study mentioned previous research showing blind spots caused by the “A-pillars” between the windshield and the cabin, the authors said more study is needed to link the blind spots to the increased deaths.

Oh there is no doubt the A Pillars are larger on SUV’s, that’a a fact, and with larger A pillars you do get a larger blind spot.
Whether it’s the main contributor to more pedestrian accidents or not is another story. My guess is the higher sight lines combined with larger pillars/blind spot are, in combination, to blame.
This is an AP story that, interestingly, was “updated” five minutes after it was published.
I wonder why.

SUV’s doing the job that cars won’t
Wait til everyone drives a silent EV. Unaware pedestrians will be getting mowed over like deer.
If it were just pedestrians on their cell phones/not paying attention, then the incidents would be consistent against all car types.
If 50% of the vehicles are cars, and 50% are Suv’s and trucks, then pedestrian involved accidents would roughly equivalent between the groups.
Given the distribution is higher than the percentage of SUV’s on the road, it.s clear that it’s not simply oh pedestrians are paying less attention. Unless you are proposing that pedestrians pay less attention when its a SUV than a car... which I would be hard pressed to believe.
If the accident rates are similar, but deaths are higher, than that’s likely do to the fact the SUV’s are larger and more likely to do fatal harm when collisions occur.
However if the accident rates are higher proportionally than their representation, for one particular style of vehicle, there is something about those vehicles attributing to it.
As I said earlier here, there is no doubt SUV’s have larger A pillars, and as such do have larger blind spots, however I doubt that’s the sole factor, but bet it is the fact you have a higher sight line and a larger blind spot combined.

At any rate, either driver or pedestrian failed to follow the rules of the road and/or weren’t paying attention. I’ve driven 30+ foot long two tons truck that were old with manual steering and brakes. Never had an accident, cut off or clipped anyone or anything.

Misleading title:
My thoughts when seeing the title was that any vehicle is more likely to hit a walker than a car. But then again, old folks shouldn’t leave their walkers where they can get ran over.
Then the article talks about pedestrians...
