If I had to guess, Uncle Sam told them (as a consequence of knowledge derived through sigint and maybe humint) “we know you’re coming - please don’t do this”. Meaning the Indians would be arriving at the scene of a blanket party thrown specifically for them.

That Indian "officer" told you some crap and you believed it? Wow !! What were the supposed Indian Army soldiers using to get to Diego Garcia? 747s? Because the IAF had only the An-12 and C-119s at that time. With no midair refuelling capacity.

Note that India had to go to the Soviets only because Nixon wanted to get closer to China and the Pakis were the conduit. JFK had made India very grateful to the US for the help extended in getting the Chinese to withdraw in 1962. 9 years later Nixon sent in the Enterprise led fleet to threaten India.

Now China screws the US and India is dependent on the russians for arms and the UNSC veto.
