The Supreme Court’s Astonishing, Inexplicable Blow to the Voting Rights Act in Wisconsin

n Wednesday, the Supreme Court issued an astonishing decision throwing out Wisconsin’s new legislative districts as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause. The majority accused a Republican justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court of greenlighting a “racial gerrymander” by creating one more majority-Black district in the State Assembly. Wednesday’s unsigned decision, issued through the shadow docket, hands Wisconsin Republicans an unexpected victory in their quest to reduce Black representation in the legislature. It also alters the law of redistricting in fundamental yet cryptic ways that might, to a cynic, seem designed to disadvantage Democrats in every single case.

"hands Wisconsin Republicans an unexpected victory in their quest to reduce Black representation in the legislature."

Note that only black DEMOCRATS are "black representation in the legislature."

What if there are black Republicans elected in the newly created districts? Hmmmm??? Or for that matter black republicans elected in the existing districts? Is that not increasing "black representation in the legislature?"

The US Supreme Court is not going along with the trick anymore.

The bloom is of the ruse!

“black representation in the legislature”

Racist as hell, isn’t it? Just like only black firemen can protect black neighborhoods or black EMTs and Paramedics can treat black people in an emergency and only black teachers can teach black kids and only black policemen can understand the needs of the black community.

You talk about entrenched racism — this is it.

Rats, standing tall for racial segregation. Somewhere George Wallace is smiling.

If I read it correctly, SCOTUS basically said the Wisconsin court ain’t got no business drawing up the district maps — that has to be done by the state’s legislature. If the state’s court is gonna do it as a temporary measure (because the legislature spent too much time arguing about it), then the state’s court has to prove the whites in the state aren’t being disenfranchised (what the Republicans claimed the state refused to research as their basis for challenging it).

I'm always amazed at the cognitive disconnect in these "gerrymandering" issues. Leftist critics claim that the only way to avoid racial discrimination in drawing districts is by considering the race of the people in those districts, and draw lines to increase the representation of those desired races.

WTH kind of propaganda is this?!

The Supreme Court found the districting to be racially biased and the MSN here has the GALL to say it was 4D chess for Republicans to stop black people?!

Racist as hell, isn’t it?

Indeed it is. Such thinking rests on the presumption that "all blacks are the same." It doesn't get much worse than using race as a proxy for literally EVERYTHING.

When is the last time you ever heard a peep about “gerrymandering” in Maryland or California?

Interesting, because the USSC ruled completely opposite in the Pennsylvania case, letting the PA SC redrawn lines stand, (which is NOT PA constitutionally acceptable)!

I think you misunderstand the issue.

You cannot be black if you are not a liberal/progressive/commie trash.

Look what the MSM had to say about Larry Elder’s run against Newsom out here in CaCaLAND in the recall: “He is the face of white supremacy.”

Which is really odd, so, you cannot be the obvious race you are (or claim to be) unless WE agree. And, just to note the historical irony of all this, it was WE who owned the slaves.

Back in the 90’s, here in Florida, the Dems had controlled the State Legislature for ever.

They decided to create PERMANENT Black Districts to ensure their grip on power.

Then came elections.

The Dems lost the legislature and most of the House delegation in DC.

Why?

In order to create these PERMANENT Black Districts, they had to move them out of adjacent formerly Dem held districts, thus diluting the Dem votes in those districts.

Voila! REPUBLICANS TOOK THEM OVER!

Then came the 2000 Census.

The Dems were absolutely sure the Republicans would dismantle these PERMANENT Black Districts, and told everybody they would, and so get their power back.

The Republicans decide to keep these PERMANENT Black Districts intact.

The Dems have been out of power ever since..................

LOL! The constitution makes it quite clear that the Legislature of each state determines this, not the Governor, not the courts. That’s what happened here. The politicized state Supreme Court threw out the map drawn up by the Republican legislature and adopted the one drawn up by the Democrat Governor - unconstitutionally.

Wallace, a Democrat, is now said among Democrats to have been a Republican, because he was racist.

“When is the last time you ever heard a peep about “gerrymandering” in Maryland or California?”

Or New York, or Oregon, or New Mexico, or New Jersey, or Pennsylvania, or Massachusetts, or Nevada, or Illinois, or...

New York and Illinois take the prize for Most Partisan Gerrymander Anywhere, and Republicans aren’t even challenging the situation in Illinois, just bending over and taking it — again.

In New York, MAYBE the courts there will take a look at things AFTER the 2022 elections.
