Russia's defence ministry said on Friday that the first phase of its military operation in Ukraine was mostly complete and that it would focus on completely "liberating" eastern Ukraine's Donbass region.
The announcement appeared to indicate that Russia may be switching to more limited goals after running into fierce Ukrainian resistance in the first month of the war

Their plan was to “shock and awe” the Zelenskyy government out of power so that they could install a puppet. That failed miserably.
Dementia Joe told Zelenksky to flee to Turkey when the invasion started and Zelensky told Dementia Joe to KMA.
They have split the Ukraine in half. Does this mean it is still an existential war for Ukraine? If so, then they should pursue nukes until every last Russian is escorted out of their country. If not, who gets to define Ukraine? The guy with the biggest sword? That’s yet another reason for the Ukes to pursue Nukes.
My prediction is that Zelenskyyy will screw this up and sign a capitulation ‘agreement’. The Ukes signed the Budapest Agreement and were invaded twice as a result. They have no reason to sign any more agreements to get betrayed.
If a time machine can be invented you can be 99.9% certain it will be created in Moscow! Why? Because Putin needs to go back in time to undo the mess he created. Even if Russian gets the Donbas it will still be the greatest defeat of a major military in modern history.
And that’s even without considering the tremendous economic costs Putin put his economy in.

According the some maps I’ve seen of Ukraine and land controlled by Russian forces it appears that they got everything they wanted.
I dont want to come off like I know everything, but I always thought the objective, geographically, was the east. Russia just sent the JV team inland and toward “Keev” to keep Ukraine and everyone busy.
Second, Putin wanted Zelensky out cause even though he was corruptable, he was corrupted with the west. Especially the reactor deal, which might have set this in motion.
Losing that deal to the “west”, meant the oligarchs would lose even more money and plans of a Putin Energy Inc go up in smoke.
Third, NATO - I really think Putin could care less. It might be on his radar but not as much as keep Ukraine under his thumb.
Anything else that happens for Russia is just a bonus.

Translation: Russia doesn’t have a chance in hell of conquering all of Ukraine and instead wants to consolidate its gains before the Ukrainians kick the Russians the hell out of Ukraine and start making ‘security buffer’ demands on Russia.
