Antarctic ice shelves are shattering. How fast will seas rise?
National Geographic ^ | Mar 28, 2022 | Antarctic ice shelves are shattering. How fast will seas rise?

All scientist Erin Pettit could see when she looked at the satellite photos of the ice shelf in front of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica was the giant crack that stretched across most of the image.

Two years before, when she and her colleagues were deciding where to put their research camp, the entire floating ice shelf—a tongue of ice poking out from the enormous glacier behind it—was solid. It was plenty safe to plan a camp there, they thought......

The size of Florida, the Thwaites Glacier holds enough ice to raise global sea levels two feet. It’s also a bottleneck protecting the larger West Antarctic ice sheet, which would raise sea level 10 feet if it were to melt completely. And because of some crucial, frightening quirks of geology and geography, Thwaites could one day become one of the most significant drivers of global sea level rise.......

Globally, seas have risen a little over 8 inches since 1900, but the rise is accelerating: A quarter of it has happened since 2006. In the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released in 2021, scientists determined global average sea level is now rising around 0.15 inch (3.7 millimeters) each year. The IPCC projected with “medium confidence” that it would rise another 15 to 30 inches by 2100, and will keep rising for centuries.

Some regions are seeing a faster rise than the global average. The U.S. East Coast, for example, is hit harder in part because the Gulf Stream is slowing and funneling less water away from the coast. U.S. coasts on average will likely see a foot of sea level rise by 2050 and two feet by 2100, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projected earlier this year.

I believe when they say "Ice Sheet" or "Ice Shelf" that is ice over water not land. Which has been explained many times on FR is a zero sum gain on sea level rise.

Besides, obama's ocean front house is not for sale yet.

Here comes the fear mongering, again.

It’s also interesting to note that the loss of some of this ice in the Antarctic has revealed what it used to be with the fossils of tropical plant life.

If it is floating, then its melting won’t change the sea level.

We probably are, but I think we still have approximately 350,000 years, before the sea levels rise enough to soak Obama’s house. 😀🙃😊🍔🤗🦃😂

I’m simple minded on this, but a basic science experiment can prove your idea.

Fill a glass with ice, pour water into glass until it is about to overflow, let the ice melt and see what happens.

The water level will actually go down, frozen water by volume consumes more space and loses that after it melts.

If this Florida size iceberg melts, it could actually lower sea levels or stay the same as you state.

Logically, think how much water is in all the oceans of the world combined, the amount of water required to raise ocean levels 2 feet would be astronomical and nearly impossible to calculate.

Maybe I just can’t visualize this stuff well enough, but the basic fear seems ridiculous. The surface area of the world’s oceans cover 139.5 million square miles. The claim is that if this chunk of ice (the size of Florida (65,000 square miles) melts, the oceans will rise a full 2 feet. That seems far out of proportion.

And, as someone has already noted, if this ice is floating, then it is already displacing all the water it’s going to displace whether it melts or not. I suppose, if it is cantilevered over the ocean (not floating), then the amount of ice above the surface would not yet be displacing any water. But I just have to believe most of this is actually floating and therefore incapable of raising the sea level.

But I am neither a biologist nor any other kind of scientist.

Climate change cult is as bad as the covid cult. Idiots and fake science.

When will the seas rise?

The very minute that COVID is over and Ukraine has peace.

Don't sell yourself short.

Compared to the dolts putting this SMU out, you are a Nobel laureat PHd Scientist.

FAKE NEWS! It will rise 10,000 feet.

The only difference between clowns like that and those that plan false flag ops is scale.

Yes, this. I’ll worry about Climate change when our rich politicians sell their ocean front property.

the entire floating ice shelf—a tongue of ice poking out from the enormous glacier behind it
The fact that floating is mentioned tells me that these people are not scientists.
The cracks are most likely due to a negative moment cause by submergence of the ice sheet as it is entering the water on a sloping path.
If this is the case then sea level will drop as the ice ‘pops’ back to the surface melted or not.

20,000 years ago most of North America was covered in ice.

Earth’s climate warmed and the ice melted. Man had no effect on this happening.

Few will argue that the earth’s climate changes - the fact are that there is no such thing as “man made” climate change.

What we are dealing with is globalist using fear to control people.

Yes, melting floating ice does not raise the water level. “Climate Change” is dependent upon an ignorant populace.

That wasn't the Thwaites Glacier, it was a xerox she took of her ass the night before.
