California’s first-in-the-nation task force on reparations is at a crossroads, with members divided on which Black Americans should be eligible for compensation as atonement for a slave system that officially ended with the Civil War but reverberates to this day.
Some members want to limit financial and other compensation to descendants of enslaved people while others say that all Black people in the U.S., regardless of lineage, suffer from systemic racism in housing, education and employment. The task force could vote on eligibility on Tuesday after putting it off last month.

start with Will Smith paying Chris Rock.
*sigh* Really don’t want to buy a ban so I’ll just mosey on by this subject today...
“a slave system that officially ended with the Civil War but reverberates to this day.”
Is this a news story or opinion?
No reparations for the Union Civil War dead and wounded.
Does the committee get to decide who to kill? Because they aren’t going to just issue “reparations”. They’re going to act like any good commie committee. In the end, “reparations” will not just be money.
Does anyone think money buys dignity and self worth?
If someone is mixed race, do they get a half share?
There should not be a single penny of federal tax dollars going to the state which they can move around to cover this.
If they want to use their state tax revenues to engage in this stupid, racist chicanery, that is their business.
There were American Indian and Chinese slaves in California as well. How about reparations for them?
Don’t give them any more ideas.
Not yet, but I'm sure they'll get to it eventually.
They've already approved robbery disguised as "reparations". Why wouldn't they also approve "reparations" for lynchings as well?
Look at what the various native American tribes do.
A series of genetic tests, family trees, and voting by the council.
And God help you if you are a mixed race, or even mixed tribe.
“Black” is about to be a very contentious definition.
I believe Dave Chappelle covered how this would go.

My U.S. History might be a little rusty, but... Wasn't California a Free State (i.e., no slavery ever, and on the Union side during the Civil War)?!
Regards,
California, dipping into its tax payers bottomless wallets.
What about descendants of black slave owners? Shouldn’t they be paying extra?
Black reparations have been prayed over time with white genes
We have more of my family’s name listed on both sides of the conflict in the national archive than I know alive today.
I wondered why as a child that it felt some kin were still fighting it. That gave me clear insight as to the cost.
Anyone who was actually a slave should be compensated by those who held them.
It was, but some southerners, mostly during the gold rush, didn’t bother to tell their slaves. Slavery was never a widespread institution in California. Some are trying to lump the treatment of Indians under the Spanish and later Chinese as laborers but neither were ever under chattel slavery except possible some very rare examples.
