Russia claimed on Monday that an attack by Kyiv’s forces on the separatist stronghold of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine had left 23 people dead, with the military accusing Kyiv of committing a “war crime”.

Moscow accused Ukraine’s army of firing a Tochka-U missile at a residential area in Donetsk, in one of the most serious attacks on the city since Russia sent troops into Ukraine more than two weeks ago.

The photo looks like the thing was planted there. No damages, not even to shrubbery. But I'm not discounting it, either. War is hell. Weird things happen and it takes time to piece together the whole picture, sometimes years. So maybe Kiev did something bad, maybe not.

What possible incentive would Kiev have to attack a random population center in Donetsk? I can see a Russian false flag operation to stir up anti-Kiev sentiment, but what would Kiev possibly gain?

Who knows. Could be a false flag, could be a missile gone astray by accident, or could be somebody doesn’t like Donetsk-ians and was left unattended near the missile launcher.

War is foggy. War is hell.
War has got a nasty smell.

If Russia insist on stealing Ukraine territory then the Ukes may as well leave the land a smoldering ruins, with hopefully radiation to last 100 years.

There are plenty of photos available, some falsely used to portray a “Russian bombing of Kiev”.
The ugliest part of the bombing is that the Ukrainian trolls were gathering the rally of military wives at the time on location.
The missile was shot down by the defenses and failed to hit the target, but one of the cluster canisters fell near the bank killing some 20 people.

See post 6. Who needs false flags when terror bombing and other forms of terror against civilians is the signature Ukrainian tactic.

No scarring of the pavement. No shrubbery damage.

It was planted.

“ What possible incentive would Kiev have to attack a random population center in Donetsk”

The same reason they’ve had for the last 8 years for shelling separatist Donetsk?

I’ve tried to keep an open mind from both sides perspective from the beginning.

Yet on this one I don’t really see the reason for the outrage on Russias part. Are they not using artillery to pound Ukrainian cities that refuse to surrender, cities with civilians in them?

So I don’t see a significant difference—except for a military standpoint the Russian city is not being besieged. Still that’s a fairly technical detail I think/guess.

The missile clearly say Chemical Weapon on it. Zelensky is a war criminal. He needs to be arrested if he ever comes out of his bunker again.

Well, they at least hit something nominally military, and not the nearby Baby Milk Factory (clearly marked “фабрика по производству детского молока”.

Don’t be so quick with assumption. Just saying, missile is like 6.5m long, the picture is mid-body guidance fins and explosive load has a 200m fragmentation range. This part could easily be tossed quite a ways.

My guess, impact (if real) was at least 75m from this part. Agree, part doesn’t “look” like it was near a high explosive, but structurally a missile is a series of tubes bolted together and they separate like this. In other words this “could” be real. It would be interesting to see impact crater to verify.

Well, I will tell you any part of a missile thrown that far from the burst point will impact pavement/bushes/whatever else and there would be *some* evidence of that.

I’m not seeing any. Not even skid marks.

And, going back and looking at the photo posted, the marks on the pavement look to me to be drag marks. As in positioning the missile body part for the best angle to take pictures of with an urban scene in the background.
