Reservists and Irregulars in Ukraine

A "Special Military Operation" vs a "Peoples War"

Russia is not fighting a war, but a Special Military Operation, as its government calls it. This has severe implications as to the actual force it can bring to bear. Add to that its conscription system is only a limited version of historical conscription systems.

Ukraine however is fighting something much closer to a 19th-20th century total war, a whole-society resistance. It is not perfect in this, but given the public will, which seems to be present, they can and almost certainly have raised larger numbers than Russia has or can, unless Russia makes major changes in its commitment to this war.

An interesting and quite deep view of the actual military balance and its implications for the nature of modern war. Among other things, for the United States, it has implications for the need for and utility of the "militia".

People in the U.S. should take notice and remember why the 2nd amendment (the right to bear arms) exists. It is meant as a deterrent against enemies, foreign and domestic. A population armed to the teeth, will be very hard to overcome, if at all.

Sorry. Don’t do “YouTube”. Can’t hear soundtracks.....

Is it captioned? Is there a transcript available? Those are the only ways “YouTube” is of any use to me.

This is something many professional military people have known since the first week of the war. There was always a path to success for Ukraine, but it required the regular forces to hold initially, and then for the territorial forces/militia/reservists to show up. Once all that went the right way for Ukraine, the long-term balance of forces began shifting in their favor.

Russia certainly has greater military potential than does ukraine, but they are much less likely to reach that potential in this war.

True, but...

WMDs are not for use within the territory of the country, and not against the population of that land.

The smaller arms (guns, rifles, etc) are what the people are allowed to own, and it would be very hard to the enemy (foreign or domestic) to fight against 50 million or more armed citizens. How many countries have 50+ million armed citizens fighting against the enemies?

It is a pity that Ukraine did not follow the lead of the Finns, South Koreans, Swiss or even Americans and establish a robust reserve force. Shame on all of their leadership.

My gosh Ukraine has foreign fighters from Tanzania, Africa and Morocco among a few discovered, in the three helicopters that were trying , for the 3rd time- to airlift the Azov Leaders out of the Steel Waheous building in Mariupol this week.

BTW there's no way only Ukraine Military leaders are calling the shots - you can bet Nato Officers are doing a great deal of navigating for them.

"The presentation also has bullet points throughout."

Suggest to anyone who posts a "video article" to mention the availability of written content in the article "blurb", and where to find it. If it has captions....SAY SO.

This video would actually have worked better as a slide-show, as the CC appeared to be just the article owner reading his on-screen slides.

I read an analysis, that the WMD are actually a burden for Russia. They cost a lot, but they cannot be used. So if Russians had more Tanks, airplanes and rockets and less WMD, they may be in better situation.
I just do not see WMD used in Ukraine. Not only using WMD is really scary, given the possible response, but using Nukes in Ukraine - too close to Russia - threatens atomic fallout even in Russia proper.

Conscripts are useless to Russia unless they can keep them for five years and motivate them by using death squads as barrier troops to keep conscripts from retreating in battle like Stalin did during World War II.
