The Parthian, or Parting Shot was taken backwards by cavalry, while they were being pursued by other cavalry. The Parthians, and other Steppe horsemen, like the later Mongols, tried to draw their opponents into chasing them, by various ruses, to use that tactic.

The tactic was to take advantage of the sweet spot offered in range between those advancing and those retreating, while the arrows were in the air. If they could gauge the distance between their pursuers just right, they could keep the pursuers within range of their arrows, while keeping just out of range of the pursuers arrows.
