Ukraine has supplies of staple foods for several years - agrarian policy minister

KYIV. April 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukraine has enough supplies of staple food products and stocks for producing animal feed for several years, and no problems with food should be anticipated in the country in the near future, Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Minister Mykola Solsky said in an interview published in Economichna Pravda (Economic Truth).

"We have supplies of staple foods for several years. We have enough vegetable oil even for ten years. It should also be added that, since we have a lot of grain and some of it serves as animal feed, we certainly have meat and dairy products. And there should be no reasons to worry," he said.

Ukraine consumes from five million to seven million tonnes of grain cultures annually, while its granaries currently contain 20 million tonnes of grain from the previous season, and another 30 million tonnes of grain is expected to be harvested this season, Solsky said.

Taking into account Ukraine's elevator capacity, the main problem will be exports of crops, he said.

"We don't see problems with food products in Ukraine now. They do exist where they cannot be delivered, but that's a different matter. Everyone sees that, even though the range of goods in groceries has shortened, they are still in place. I have a feeling that the situation has begun improving slightly," Solsky said.

As reported earlier, Ukraine exported up to five million tonnes of agricultural products monthly through the Odesa and Mykolayiv ports before February 24, but now it can ship only about 500,000 tonnes of grain. Due to this, Ukraine's monthly export revenues have declined by about $1.5 billion.

How are they storing this stuff?

Can’t picture vegetable oil lasting for 10 years.

Although I may have some salad dressing in my fridge that is close to 10 years old!

I keep seeing FReepers use this term. Here, I've linked it to Wikipedia:

Holodomor

The term "Holodomor" emphasises the famine's man-made character and alleged intentional aspects such as rejection of outside aid, confiscation of all household foodstuffs and restriction of population movement. The Holodomor famine was part of the wider Soviet famine of 1932–1933 which affected the major grain-producing areas of the country.[10]

Ukraine was one of the largest grain producing states in the USSR and as a result was hit particularly hard by the famine.[11] Millions of inhabitants of Ukraine, the majority of whom were ethnic Ukrainians, died of starvation in a peacetime catastrophe unprecedented in Ukrainian history.

We have enough vegetable oil even for ten years.

That stuff is good for that long?

[I know most 'use by' dates are actually 'suggestions'.]

I would guess this is false information and would sure undermine all the pleas for food donations and funds to feed starving and freezing Ukrainians.

It was not so much hit by the famine, it was hit by Stalin who took all the food they produced to feed Russia and starved between 7 and 10 million Ukrainians to death.

My Great Grandparents were murdered during the Holodomor.

Before that they went through the Bolshevik Revolution. The Bolsheviks came on to their family farm, took all their livestock and destroyed all their crops.

Some how they were able to get their 2 sons out of Ukraine and into the US army during WWI.

Talked to a Russian guy today who told me back then if you owned ANY land, you were consider “elite” and deserve to be punished, according to the ruling politicos at the time.

Maybe he refers to the ingredients. I don’t know about the manufacture of vegetable oil, but if they have the ingredients to make the stuff for 10 years, he could be right.
