Remote Workers Moving into More Affordable Cities, Displacing Some Low-Income Residents
Breitbart ^ | 04/21/2022 | Penny Starr

Posted on 04/21/2022 10:06:35 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

The coronavirus pandemic solidified the idea people don’t have to show up at an office to get work done. That fresh reality has led to a growing number of people relocating to more affordable cities across the country.

But while the development is beneficial to remote — or so-called Zoom — workers, it is leading to rent increases in areas where newcomers are settling in. And in some cases forcing low-income residents to leave the neighborhood.

If I wanted to live in a city where I could focus on work, Toledo seems to be that kind of city.

Oakland as well, but only because you don’t dare leave the house.

Thats how gentrification starts. Before long there will be nice schools, food markets, and the gas stations will not have bullet proof glass and will have gas nozzle lock latches, or even worse if they don’t stop it now.

No mention but I doubt they're moving from the big cities to other big cities. They're moving to SAFER places.

The Business Insider article cited a Wall Street Journal analysis of census data that revealed in 2018 alone, cities with a population of more than half a million people lost nearly 27,000 residents between 25 and 39.

Business Insider reported on how the scenario is unfolding, including how during the coronavirus pandemic many younger adults opted to move back to their hometown while others relocated to the suburbs:

Home prices soaring in some places driving taxes up.

Californians moving in paying cash 800k for a 3k home driving taxes up

The greed and selfishness is outrageous and destructive

Affordable cities? Where?

Dee-troit City, parts of Baltimore and Cleveland. Some Rural towns will give you the land if you build a house there (but internet may be spotty). Someone else mentioned Oakland, but I'm not sure that it is really that low cost.

LOL!!! There was an article posted right here on FR that analyzed the need for workers to commute to large cities like NYC, Boston, Philly, etc. The article analyzed the costs of maintaining business in these overpriced places and the author concluded since most services are internet-based now, there is no reason to work (i.e. live) in what are demorat run hell holes.

Great! Unless you’re going to open your own security-firm, you’re going to have to hire one! How much does that cost? Ammo and body armor is expensive!

Here in Las Vegas (still an affordable city although not everyone’s cup of tea due to the summers) they’re actively headhunting tech folks who live in the Bay Area. With the money you save (including famously no income tax), one can fly up to San Fransicko every weekend.

Scottsdale AZ is now in the Bay Area price range.
Sure glad I bought when I did.

Austin, Nashville, Raleigh, and Lexington are but a few of the unlucky cities being overwhelmed by folks leaving high tax, high crime areas.

And, guess what ? These transplants are bringing their high taxes, high crime, and traffic nightmares with them.

Grand Junction, Colorado. When I moved back here in 2011, I was able to rent a 2 bed place for $500/month. Now I can’t even think about moving, as a 2 bed place runs $1200-$1500 because of these whackos working at home for companies in Cali that pay very, very well and they can work from home. 2 years ago, a 3 bed would run you $200,000 to buy. Now? $300,000. Jobs around here, for the most part and barring the 2 bigger employers in town (St Mary’s and CMU), are just above minimum wage. Funny part is, I haven’t had a raise in over 5 years. The homeless population here is growing by leaps and bounds, and no, it isn’t because of legal pot.

Yeah, well Reno median home price is now $600k. WHAT!? And then, one could just drive over to san fran on weekends. But not today. Chain controls on I-80 over Donner Summit.

That is a total BS statement.

Lyrics

Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio is like being nowhere at all
All through the day how the hours rush by
You sit in the park and you watch the grass die!
Ah, but after the sunset, the dusk and the twilight
When shadows of night start to fall
They roll back the sidewalk precisely at ten
And people who live there are not seen again!
Just two lonely truckers from Great Falls, Montana
And a salesman from places unknown (-ces unknown)
All huddled together in downtown Toledo
To spend their big night all alone!

You ask how I know of Toledo, Ohio? Well I spent a week there one day
They've got entertainment to dazzle your eyes
Go visit the bakery and watch the buns rise!
Ah, but let's not forget that the folks of Toledo
Unselfishly gave us the scale
No springs, honest weight, that's the promise they made
So smile and be thankful next time you get weighed!
And "wiv and wet wiv", let this be our motto
Let's let the sleeping dogs lie (-ping dogs lie)
And here's to the dogs of Toledo, Ohio
Ladies, we bid you goodbye!
