If Grassley wins he'll bump Hatch to #2, like Hatch bumped Thurmond (who served longer in total but started out as a Democrat).

Thurmond's Republican years (1964-2003) corresponded to a big, eventful chunk of my life. Hatch's years in office were 1977-2019, and the last 20 years of my life were just kind of a blur. It's hard to believe that we're almost a quarter-way into the new century.

But yeah, it's a job like any other, and sometimes you manage to keep the job for decades by doing nothing.
