Women and children are among the scores of people killed in an explosion at an illegal oil refinery in a border town in southern Nigeria, authorities say.
"The fire occurred in an illegal bunkering site situated at the boundary between Rivers State and Imo State," the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) said in a statement sent to CNN on Sunday. It said the fire had led "to the death of men, women and children in the hundreds," adding that the remains of some victims "were burnt beyond recognition." According to local media reports, emergency response teams have counted 109 bodies, while others remain missing. In October last year, 25 people, including children, were killed in a blast at an illegal refinery in Rivers State, one of Nigeria's top oil producing areas.

Nigeria’s president has said the country is in “shock and trauma” following the deaths of at least 100 people from an explosion at an illegal oil refinery.
President Muhammadu Buhari described the incident in Imo state, southern Nigeria, as a “catastrophe and a national disaster”.
Many victims were burnt beyond recognition.
The police are now looking for the owner of the illegal refinery.
The damage to fishing and farming caused by the oil industry over the decades and the failure to share the oil wealth has led some to find other ways to make money.
Illegal refining is attractive as in parts of the oil-rich Niger Delta as it is seen as being relatively easy to pull off, despite efforts to halt the practice.
Dozens of people were thought to have been working at the refining plants when they were caught in the huge fire.
The death toll has risen as emergency workers go through the scene. Ifeanyi Nnaji of the National Emergency Management Agency told BBC Igbo that the number killed now stood at 109.
“We learnt many bodies are in nearby bushes and forests as some illegal operators and their patrons scampered for safety,” he earlier told the AFP news agency.
In a statement on Sunday, Buhari offered his condolences to families of the victims and said those responsible for the explosions must be caught and brought to justice.
The authorities have been struggling to curb the proliferation of illegal plants where stolen crude oil is refined. The president ordered security forces to intensify efforts to shut these refineries.

Sure, plenty of fluid cat crackers and distillation columns lying around all over the place. Just a little bit of pipe and some welding and et voila! You have a refinery.

I’m currently inside a real oil refinery right now. The safety practices and requirements are beyond most people’s beliefs to keep these plants running and the workers safe. Super high temperatures and pressures involving very volatile materials.
This is not part of your “great conspiracy”, but merely a matter of operating time for a bootleg refinery to explode.

It’s been conveyed to me that nuke plants are extremely safe with multiple redundancy checks.
I’ve never worked in a nuke plant, but know that yes, they have redundancy on all safety systems and then some. Just shutting them down takes months - Germany wants to restart some of theirs, but it’s too late according to the operators.
Pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Lot of “coincidences” that just seem to all be coalescing, but I’m sure it’s all just a crazy conspiracy theory...
Looks more like the “refinery” consists of a hole drilled in a pipeline carrying finished product.
I recall seeing a video from Mexico I believe where someone had drilled a hole in a gasoline pipeline and literally hundreds of people were loading up gas in garbage cans and even plastic bags. All of a sudden it got a source of ignition and the whole area went up. Killed dozens as I recall.
Yeah I saw that too. Pretty horrible.
