The real shame is the media knows, and provides cover while the public remains uninterested. Sure, the public is upset that the cost of living is going up, but they don’t exactly understand why, nor do they care about details. Like spoiled children, they just want it to get fixed.

Right you are. A free press should act as a powerful spotlight on the government. There was a reason the Founders put it in the very first amendment.
But as you noted, our media today is little different that the Soviet media of the Brezhnev era. This situation is more than just sad. It’s tragic.
