Every marathon runner I know(non professionals) is weak, skinny fat, and has a bunch of URIs every year.
Play sports. When he’s 13-15 start lifting and continue playing sports.
When older, add in yoga.

(I’m amazed that weak, fat people can actually complete a marathon. I trained for a half, and that was tough enough.)
