That's an interesting question, and one that has troubled believers since the beginning: why does God permit evil things to happen? Honestly, I don't have an answer, but why assume that the creator shares your definition of "compassionate", and, just as clearly, that is not the life we know. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment", Hebrews 9:27. Dying is not compassionate, but if judgment follows, that's where justice occurs, not in this world. I suppose that in the end, it's a matter of faith.

“Dying is not compassionate...”
I think that it is (the manner of dying usually isn’t though!). God wanted us (starting with Adam and Eve) to live in His presence in the Garden of Eden. He walked and talked with Adam and Eve. But He also gave them free will.
And of course they used it. And while Satan was correct when he said “See - you didn’t die!”, Adam and Eve WOULD die some day as was promised by God.
And by the grace of God they (and us) would die. They wouldn’t have to live for eternity on the now sin-filled earth and separated from God.
