Two longtime York County Republican legislators ousted by challengers

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Two multi-decade Republican lawmakers in York County will not be up for re-election in the fall, after losing their primary races to challengers.

In Windsor Township, Wendy Fink beat State Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York), who has been in office nearly 30 years. In Hellam Township, Joe D’Orsie beat State Rep. Keith Gillespie (R-York), who has been in office nearly 20 years. “Something happens after a couple of decades after you're in political office. After talking to people, I think the fact that I am a rookie kind of appeals to them,” D’Orsie said while making campaign stops on Election Day.

Both challengers had criticized their incumbent rivals for not doing enough to fight state lockdowns during the pandemic or pass election reforms.

“A lot of our career politicians that are in Harrisburg right now – they're not working for the people," Fink said on Election Day. "They're working for themselves. They're sitting back, collecting their paycheck and not hearing our voices."

With no Democratic challengers, the candidates are all but guaranteed to win.

The shift to farther-right candidates is part of a broader trend, according to political analysts.

“What we are seeing increasingly within the Republican Party are candidates who have been lauded as very conservative being told they are insufficiently conservative just because they don't stand on a specific issue to the fullest extent of that policy issue,” said Alison Dagnes, a political science professor at Shippensburg University.

For the most part, but not all of it was good. (I posted this also on a similar thread...) Not cited in the summary, but in the full article, is Jason Silvis of Westmoreland County losing to Jill Cooper. This had nothing to do with bona fides and everything to do with politics. His district was redistricted to include the area of Murrysville, which has a significant business district and a lot of fairly well-to-do people. Only problem is that Jason isn’t from Murrysville. Murrysville will be damned if they are represented by anyone who isn’t from there, so they ran Jill. We’re furious because we busted our asses to get Jason elected two years ago, finally ousting a looonnnggg time Democrat.

There was some very dirty pool with the York County Saylor vs. Fink race.

Radio commercials “time to retire Harrisburg Stan” began airing every hour on the local Cumulus affiliate WITHOUT a disclaimer “paid for by....”

After Wendy Fink emerged as the candidate some of her materials also failed to have the required disclosures.

I will be trying to follow the money and find who has been funding this political newcomer.

It is a beautiful thing. I live just north of York in Dauphin County. My daughter and I sat down over the weekend and discussed candidates. We both agreed to not vote for any incumbents except one, Scott Perry. He’s the chairman of the House Freedom caucus.

Redistricting screwed the R’s in Murrysville.

Not that there aren’t a lot of Murrysville Libs.

My post was talking about the state legislative district, for which Murrysville is fine, but for the Congressional (Fed) district, yeah, they won't elect an R for the next 10 years, because they're lumped in with downtown Pittsburgh.
