Margaret Thatcher: The Grocer’s Daughter?
American Thinker.com ^ | May 22, 2022 | Michael Curtis

Almost immediately after a 20-foot-high bronze statue of Lady Thatcher was unveiled in her hometown of Grantham, Lincolnshire, it was pelted with four eggs thrown by a 59-year-old left-wing protestor, the deputy director of an arts center at the University of Leicester who posted about his action on social media. None hit the monument.

Margaret Thatcher died more than thirty years after she left political office, but she still arouses fierce enmity by political foes as she did during her political career. The egg-throwing reflects the reality that she has left a complex legacy, much loved and much hated.

Thatcher was a conviction politician with a strong, determined, uncompromising style, which offended many, as well as an advocate of her form of British conservatism. Thatcher may be regarded as the most admired and the most disliked British politician of the second half of the twentieth century.

Margaret Thatcher, nee Roberts, born in 1925 in an apartment above her father’s grocery store, studied chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, worked for a short time as a research chemist developing soft ice cream, and then became a barrister, practicing law for two years. She was elected a Conservative member of parliament in 1959, and was appointed minister of education by Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1970-74. Thatcher in 1975 defeated Heath to become leader of the Conservative party, the first woman to lead a major political party in the UK.

She was by far the best Prime Minister since Churchill.

All the things he said she could be criticized for, I agreed with her on.

The ANC was a terrorist organization. South Africa is a mineral treasurehouse - one of the only sources in the world for some vital minerals other than the Soviet Union - during the Cold War. Alienating South Africa during the Cold War would have been stupid in the extreme and self defeating.

Backing Pinochet in Chile? As opposed to the Soviet aligned Communist Allende? Hell yes. A good relationship with King Fahd of Saudi Arabia? That country has a crapload of oil which the West needed - particularly in light of the Cold War. A good relationship with Mohammed Zia of Pakistan? Remember that whole Cold War thing? I’m sorry but you’re not always going to have the luxury of only backing choir boys abroad. A SOB who is in the words of Eisenhower “our SOB” is a lot better than an SOB who is friendly to the Commies.

If you have a chance, pick up her autobiography "10 Downing Street" - it's a great read.

Done in, eventually, by England's own type of RINOs. Shame.

You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. And in this case, the Iron Lady had to break the eggheads of academia, the arts bunch, and the media. If she’d done nothing else, this would have been a tremendous accomplishment. We were blessed in the 1980s to have three great leaders who overthrew communism - Mrs. Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, and Ronald Reagan. Too bad they were succeeded by pipsqueaks who rode on their coattails - like the Bushes, John Major and Boris, and the current Marxist pope.

I wonder what took them so long, Hillsdale College in Michigan has a statue of her sitting in a chair. Maybe some one with HTML knowledge can post it here. Anyway they also have one of Reagan, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, Washington, maybe Madison, and I'm sure I probably missed one.

Hillsdale, Michigan has a few unique things to see and goto for a weekend and Hillsdale College is one of the places to visit. Also the auctions at the Fair Grounds every weekend is a place to go and experience and you might find some good junk to bring home, but you might have to buy a few boxes of junk to get the one piece you want haha.

Guess he doesn’t win the miniature plastic teddy bear.

Unless he guesses Nathan’s weight correctly.

Drop the "British conservatism" and you have the sort of leader the Left wants for its own. But they want ours to be moderate, compromising, non-descript enablers to their agendas.

The most ironic thing (IMO) is that he greatest crime...in the eyes of the Maoists who hated her...was her policy on coal mines. How dare she shut down the mines?!?! But today's Maoists want every coal mine on earth shut down.
