Hood was OK under Lee commanding Texans. Lee politely recommended against giving him a higher job. Joseph Johnston kept retreating towards Atlanta. He had earlier retreated toward Richmond, before getting wounded and was temporarily replaced by Lee, which became permanent. So they put Hood in charge of the remaining Confederate army in the west. He ignored Sherman in Georgia and reinvaded Tennessee and destroyed his army. Seems like sort of a joke to name the base for him to the first place.
However, FU to these sorts of changes.

Hood is a poster boy for the Peter Principle. Excellent Division commander, totally inept as an army commander. Lee’s assessment of Hood’s skills “too much wolf, not enough fox.
