Cops responding to the Uvalde, Texas, school massacre “made the wrong decision” when they waited to breach the classroom door where a gunman had barricaded himself inside with children, a top law enforcement official said Friday.
The on-scene commander made the call that the carnage at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday had gone from an active shooter situation to a “barricaded suspect” situation, Col. Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said in a briefing Friday.
“With the benefit of hindsight, where I’m sitting now, of course it was not the right decision, it was the wrong decision, period,” McCraw said.
“There was no excuse for that.”
The admission came as police revealed the first time that 18-year-old shooter Salvador Ramos fired off at least 100 rounds and marched in through an unlocked door that had been propped open by a teacher before he killed 19 students and two teachers.

Everyone in law enforcement in that town should be fired
Trust the police - THEY know what to do.
That's why we don't need personal firearms - the "police" will keep us safe...
“..How can they choose to stand around while shooting is going on? ..”
I don’t know but going from an “active shooter” status to “barricaded shooter” status might mean the killing was over and taking him down was the next step. - Maybe, maybe not.
Right, they aren’t responsible, they’re victims.
Yet he is using it as an excuse.
A truly disgusting performance...
BINGO...From coast to coast and it went on nearly a year, and very few were even arrested and the few who were arrested were IMMEDIATELY released.
Spit*
Good Lord, look at the bellies on those guys.
Is that really the best Ector County can do?
“Everyone in law enforcement in that town should be fired”
Absolutely
Cop made a wrong decision? Admitting to that is better than lying in court which is what I’ve seen Vienna, Va cops do.
The incident commander made the wrong assumption that the shooter had either killed all the kids or was done shooting them. Thus the incident had now become a barricaded standoff with a deferent set of protocols.
In a situation like that you engage the combatant and stay engaged until the situation is resolved. The thinking being that while he is busy shooting at officer he can't continue killing the unprotected.
Most all LEOs accept that and are ready to engage until the threat is gone. Someone ordered them to hang back based on false assumptions.
I don’t believe that. They screwed up and this is a good cover
He's now the incident idiot.
Why in hell would they assume that? There had to be survivors, there had to be some bleeding out, some needing immediate life save medical attention. Assumed they were all dead? Total bull shit.
Why wasn’t he then asked “What would the correct response have been?” and “What are you going to do to guarantee that in the future that will be the response?”.
Exactly, that’s what parents should do.
I live in a town with about 1700 people. A few years back the high school kids were taken to hear Wayne La Pierre speak.
I’m thankful time has stood still here. Many of the residents are armed. If someone tried this in our schools, if the police didn’t take care of the perp, I know the parents would.
And another thing, our county sheriff is a Bible-believing Christian Conservative. Firearms are safe from government confiscation here.
Locked not barricade
Liars
The only result should be: “Give me your badge and your gun, immediately—you are through!”
I wonder how much they typically make a year for basically just handing out speeding tickets.
