The Soviets wanted an assault rifle like it. Kalishnikov developed one with only four pieces, the AK-47. Very rugged and so simple to use, illiterate peasants could use it.
I had one. It was tough but very inaccurate past 25 meters. After firing 1,000 rounds I sold it. Kicked like an SOB.
