Samoa, China agree on win-win cooperation as Beijing seeks 10-nation South Pacific deal

China has clinched another security deal in the south Pacific, this time with Samoa.

The deal was signed during a visit to Samoa by China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, who is on an eight-nation tour of the region.

Samoan Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa met with Mr Wang on Saturday in Samoa's capital, Apia, with both sides reaffirming commitment to win-win cooperation.

It comes after the security deal Beijing sealed with Solomon Islands last month, which could see Chinese military personnel based there, or the establishment of a Chinese military installation.

Australia's Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, has just spent three days in Fiji attempting to improve Australia's standing in the Pacific, to blunt China's military and economic ambitions in the region.

Newly installed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's centre-left government has made the Pacific Islands an early diplomatic priority.

On Saturday, Mr Albanese said his Labor government's plan includes a defence training school, support for maritime security, a boost in aid and re-engaging the region on climate change.

"We will be proactive in the region. We want to engage," he told reporters.

China is building on a security pact it recently signed with Solomon Islands, which has alarmed Australia, the United States and its allies because of fears of a stepped-up military presence by Beijing.

(Western) Samoa is now independent of New Zealand. This is payback. American Samoa-same people just a few miles apart. Why would one people stick it to the kiwis while the other sticks with us? We were colonized by the same people once. It’s American welfare. We should cut loose our Samoa and let them make their own teal with the Chicoms who ha a billion+ people to feed. They do like fish btw.

During WW 2 Japan tried to unite the western Pacific under a phony organization called “The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere”.

Looks like China is trying to do the same thing. But China is playing it smart. They’re using not guns, but butter.

Samoans are great folks. know many. and given our current gov’t’s record on supporting our allies, i don’t blame them (the independent Samoa, not American) for playing the CCP. in fact, it’s probably, smart diplomacy for them.

The fish will be gone after the loans go bad. Then they will have to reclaim their assets some other way. Perhaps the islanders will need our help when it comes to formulating their own cinco de mayo.

Independent Samoa discourages visitors-one travel publication.

The Greater Asia Co-prosperity Sphere was Japanese with Japan being the big brother. Can’t imagine anybody wanting them in that capacity. China will be worse and we created a monster. Capitalists taught the communists and then sold out to them. Like selling them the rope to hang us with. So is capitalism the answer? Losers need an opportunity. It’s out there but has to be constantly tweaked at the expense of being called socialist. It’s not a tightrope to walk.

Julius Nyerere had it right. The Chicoms built them a railroad and he kicked them out. Sadat did that with the Soviets after they built the Aswan Dam. Our deals are more even handed, right?(Could be wrong.) The old Chicoms and the Soviets had their own motives. They were certainly not altruistic. Today’s Chicoms are different. They’ll make sure their investment is paid off.

Perhaps our business deals should be more along the lines of what Governor Palin was able to get out of the oil companies in Alaska. Win-win? Would giving an inch to these Pacific countries give them the incentive to demand a mile?

Just remember. Ferdinand Marcos demanded more money from us for the privilege of protecting them. Trump put a stop to $hit like that. Ask Germany.
