That is Hattie McDaniel. She certainly wasn’t a whiner.
Mammy was one of my favorite people in the book and the movie. She took the unfair, awful lot that life gave to her and made something wonderful of it. She didn’t need mentors, she became a strong loving mentor herself to those around her even though there was no “path to promotion” available to her.
It seems that Hattie McDaniel who played Mammy, even amid the poverty and racial discrimination while she was growing up, had the same approach to life. Wasn’t it she who said, “ I did my very best, and then God did all the rest.”
