Lose your traditions...lose your national identity. Last I looked, it was up to the people of the UK to decide to keep a monarchy - or not. Stop shaming others about who they can or can’t support. That’s fascist.
I don’t understand the American infatuation with these royal cretins either. The British and the world would have been better off the last two hundred years if these royals had gone the way of the French monarchs.
The Queen doesn't "rule." UK has been a parliamentary democracy since Charles II, if I recall, with several more recent Acts to adjust the relation of the Lords to the "commoner" MPs, and to fully enfranchise Northern Ireland.
As for "inbreeding", aristocrats Philip and Diana and commoners Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (mother of the Queen) and Catherine Middleton have contributed much to the royal family's formerly German-dominated gene pool. If it were not so, several of the Queen's children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, all of whom have been in the public eye since birth, would have displayed gross genetic problems; but have not.
The royal family has a diplomatic and cultural role in today's system. They oversee diplomatic relations with around 140 nations and territories. Many of their duties are analogous to the State Department in the U.S. The RF members' duties include briefings and other preparations for meetings and events that are more than merely social, but ease the way for trade and cultural relations. They also are patrons of hundreds of cultural institutions and charitable organizations within the UK, similarly bringing diplomacy, recognition and fund-raising for cultural improvements. These are the things that were too boring for Miz Markle to bear.
Just think; if UK scrapped the system, they could elect people as we do, such as Carter, the Bushes, the Clintons, Obama, Biden, or the first nonbinary trans person of color because "it's time."
Fortunately we still have some free speech left and we can still support whatever we want.
