Boston man arrested after alleged arson at Salem’s Satanic Temple that damaged porch (deemed a "hate crime" - honest!)

A Chelsea man was arrested after he allegedly set fire to the Satanic Temple in Salem late Friday night, forcing its occupants to evacuate, officials said.

Daniel Lucey, 42, faces charges of arson, interfering with civil rights, and destruction to a place of worship, Salem Police Chief Lucas J. Miller said in a statement on Saturday.

Lucey remains in custody, according to the statement.

Lucey told police he traveled to Salem to set the temple on fire and said he considered his actions “a hate crime,” Miller said.

Security camera photos posted to Twitter by The Satanic Temple’s cofounder, Lucien Greaves, show a man in a grey T-shirt emblazoned with the word “God” approach the front door of the building.

Security footage shows the man allegedly lighting the steps of the porch on fire before lighting an area in front of the door, Greaves said in a telephone interview on Saturday morning. The man then took a walk around the block before returning to watch the flames, Greaves said.

He was arrested upon the arrival of the Salem police.

...

Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll denounced the “awful” incident in a statement.

“On behalf of the City of Salem, we condemn this hateful attack,” she said. “Salem is a welcoming place, and the actions of this individual are not reflective of who we are or our values as a community.”

The Satanic Temple, which was founded in 2013 and officially recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a church in 2019, is unaffiliated, but often confused with the Church of Satan. The Satanic Temple is “resolutely non-theistic” and does not believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural, but views Satan as “a symbol of the Eternal Rebel in opposition to arbitrary authority,”

So the arsonist considered his actions a hate crime?

Or did the journalist mean to say that the police considered it a hate crime?

I think I got it wrong. It appears the perp self-identified it as a hate crime.

Perhaps the Satanic Temple put him up to it?

Lucien Greaves aka Doug Mesner aka Douglas Misicko uses multiple fake names and is essentially a crisis actor. He is tied to a filmmaker named Malcolm Jarry aka Cevin Soling, everything they do is staged. They pretend to be one thing to attract support and money from the financiers of the pro-abortion movement, but in fact they descend ideologically from Nazi-oriented Satanists like Anton LaVey and Robert de Grimston and Charles Manson and David Lane and their collaborator Shane Bugbee, a sicko who served as an agent for John Wayne Gacy. They straddle all sides of the political fence in order to advance their agenda of sowing chaos—for example, Bugbee did an underground news show where he went from a tour of a KKK museum and interviews with Charles Manson’s wife and Anton LaVey’s daughter to interviews with Occupy Wall Street. They are agents provocateur, would not at all be surprised if “Greaves” knew the perp.

so the man came to Salem to burn a place of worship -503c no doubt - that he did not like, watched his handiwork, and called it a hate crime.

sounds to me like something the KKK would do to a Negro church in the South.

as far as I know, no one has a monopoly on the term ‘place of worship’, yet to come to Salem, and no other place where that religious organizatioon dwells, is significant.

the loss is to the entire American religious community, because for one to do this and not be punished, in this time when some folks might just not give a care, and attempt to burn down their targeted ‘place of worship’, which just might be YOURS’, or, MINE!

Greaves has spoken on the topics of Satanism, secularism, and The Satanic Temple at universities throughout the United States,[11][12][13] and he has been a featured speaker at national conferences hosted by American Atheists,[14] the American Humanist Association,[15] and the Secular Student Alliance.[16]

Greaves has been instrumental in setting up the Protect Children Project, the After School Satan project, and several political demonstrations and legal actions designed to highlight social issues involving religious liberty and the separation of church and state.[17][18]

He says he has received many death threats, and deliberately does not use his legal name to avoid threats to his family.[5][19]

In an interview, Greaves describes how the idea for The Satanic Temple was conceived. Greaves and his colleagues envisioned The Satanic Temple as a “poison pill” in the Church/State debate. Their idea was that Satanists, asserting their rights and privileges where religious agendas have been successful in imposing themselves upon public affairs, could serve as a reminder that such privileges are for everybody, and can be used to serve an agenda beyond the current narrow understanding of what the religious agenda is.[20]

Sounds like sympathy for the devil.

Meaning the ST came to Salem/Shalom, which never know of a satanic church as part of its war against the governments historical treatment of historical religious faith and its influence on government.

And what a religion: Grey Faction, Satanic Temple and Lucien Greaves Fact Sheet:
For almost a decade Douglas Misicko using several aliases (including Douglas Mesner and Lucien Greaves) has harassed groups helping child abuse, rape and trauma survivors. He has also harassed groups providing research in support of child abuse, rape and trauma survivors. In 2013, he and others created a group called the Satanic Temple. One part of this group is called the Grey Faction. The Grey Faction states they “invade” conferences. These conferences are provided to help and educate child abuse, rape and trauma survivors and their helpers. - https://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/exposing-doug-mesnerlucien-greaves-co-founder-of-the-satanic-temple-and-grey-faction-presenter/

Orgies, Harassment, Fraud: Satanic Temple Rocked by Accusations, Lawsuit By Julia Duin On 10/29/21 at 3:16 PM EDT

Following a failed abortion lawsuit in June 2020,[89] the Satanic Temple announced a religious abortion ritual on August 5, 2020, exempting members in RFRA states from "enduring medically unnecessary and unscientific abortion regulations when seeking to terminate their pregnancy".[90] In September 2021, as part of its opposition to the Texas Heartbeat Act, the Satanic Temple wrote the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, saying that it had a faith-based right to access medical abortion drugs, including misoprostol and mifepristone.[91] Temple lawyers protest a specific Texas abortion law, recently sustained by the US Supreme Court, arguing that the Temple's status as a non-theistic religious organization should ensure access to abortion as a faith-based right.[92][93] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Temple#Religious_abortion_ritual

However, since an org. which does not hold to any religious faith can be defined to be a religion, then any secular org of stated beliefs could be, thus be liable to suffering the same exclusion from government sanction and support as the ST seeks to prevent traditional religion from having.

On April 25, 2019, the Temple announced it had received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service, being classified as a "church or a convention or association of churches."[25] The Satanic Temple had previously been reluctant to pursue tax-exempt status until the Johnson Amendment was weakened by an executive order "Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty" signed by President Trump in May 2017.[26] Co-founder Lucien Greaves stated at the time: ... . , it seems reasonable that non-believers should adjust their language accordingly, and insist that atheistic and secular non-profits, advancing a distinct religious opinion and/or opinion upon religion, are themselves rightful beneficiaries of religious tax exemption as well.[27] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Temple#Tax-exempt_status

this is the beauty of the 1st amendment!
it is for every American citizen, whether the other American citizen likes it or not!

i just wonder how many pair of soiled undies you went through, when the Pagan (no reference to make believe biker gang) community sued the Veterans Administration in 2007 over that agency’s refusal to allow the pentacle on veterans’ headstones - since Pagan religions have been covered in military chaplains’ manuals since 1970.

Thanks for the ping to the additional info. On this part:

“” The Satanic Temple is “resolutely non-theistic” and does not believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural, but views Satan as “a symbol of the Eternal Rebel in opposition to arbitrary authority,”””

That’s what they claim now, but on early versions of their website, they professed belief in the existence of in Satan (which some of their affiliates still profess). But they found it was a better marketing and legal strategy to say it the way they do above. This is from a 2013 cache of a page from their website:

* * *
https://web.archive.org/web/20130115030653/http://www.thesatanictemple.com/religious-beliefs-of-the-satanic-temple/

The Satanic Temple believes that God is supernatural and thus outside of the sphere of the physical. God’s perfection means that he cannot interact with the imperfect corporeal realm. Because God cannot intervene in the material world, He created Satan to preside over the universe as His proxy. Satan has the compassion and wisdom of an angel. Although Satan is subordinate to God, he is mankind’s only conduit to the dominion beyond the physical. In addition, only Satan can hear our prayers and only Satan can respond. While God is beyond human comprehension, Satan desires to be known and knowable. Only in this way can there be justice and can life have meaning.

Hail Satan!

* * *

A faction of their group called the International Satanic Temple which continues to profess these beliefs, saying on their Twitter account with respect to Greaves’ outreach to the pro-abortion movement, “the Temple made a wrong turn when it moved towards politics and away from Satan.”
